Graeme Souness makes Premier League title prediction with bad news for old club Liverpool

Liverpool will hope to be one of the challengers for the Premier League title this season, having seen Arsenal and Manchester City battle it out to be crowned champions last term

Graeme Souness has ruled Liverpool out of winning the Premier League title, insisting Manchester City will be crowned champions once again.

City have dominated English football in recent years, winning the top-flight in five of the past six years. The only team to stop them has been the Reds, but they endured a dreadful campaign last season that saw them miss out on qualification for the Champions League.

Boss Jurgen Klopp has added to his squad in the summer transfer window, brining in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. But Souness believes that City are still the team to beat and that Arsenal, having spent £200m already, will be their closest challengers.

"I don’t think the Premier League is in danger of becoming a one-trick pony, but I do think Manchester City will be champions again. They are the strongest team, they’ve got the best group of players I’ve ever known in the Premier League," he told the Sky Bet Fan Hope Survey.

"They’ve got a manager [Pep Guardiola] who is vastly experienced and successful. They’ve got the best players – and it’s the best players that win you leagues. I think there will be the same challenger this year – Arsenal will challenge City.

"Arsenal would have won the league if that had a little bit more experience and retained a little bit more belief at difficult times. You look at Arsenal last year, there were no serial winners in their team, when they were way out in front.

HAVE YOUR SAY! Who will win the Premier League title this season? .

"Going into that stretch, City just said to themselves, 'let’s just win this game, and eventually Arsenal will be looking over their shoulder that much, their focus will come off their game', and that’s exactly what happened – Arsenal bottled it."

Souness believes that Liverpool's midfield remains weaker than their title rivals and called for Klopp to add at least two more players to his squad. The Scot highlighted how signing Declan Rice will boost Arsenal as a method for the Reds to follow.

“Assessing Liverpool, for me, the goalkeeper is more than good enough and the back four is more than good enough. They’ve got the hardest thing in abundance - goalscorers, so scoring goals will not be a problem," he added.

“They have signed two central midfield players, and I personally would like another couple of midfield players. I think the midfield needs a complete overhaul, and if they get the right ones then they can be challenging [for the title].

“It's paramount that there's strength in midfield, that was where our issues were last year. It’s hard to get the kind of player they're after. [Klopp] wants midfield energy like Jordan Henderson. He also wants that player to have the creative instincts and chip in with goals.

"For Arsenal to be challenging for the title again, it’ll be interesting to see if they’re damaged by the experience of last year. Signing Declan Rice will improve them, it’s just a question of how much improvement is there – but City are still the team to catch."
