Has Magic Millions’ new race The Debut gutted QLD 2YO racing?

The introduction of $500,000 for The Debut on Magic Millions day has added an extra dimension to two-year-old racing in Queensland. However, some question if it has come at the expense of the week in, week out metropolitan product. Two-youth field sizes in Brisbane have been bordering on embarrassing, with just five starters greeting the judge again at Doomben on Saturday.

Mishani Man took his two-year-olds to the Gold Coast instead of racing in town. He gang tackled the QTIS 2YO Handicap with five of the seven runners for big time owner Mike Crooks. Mishani Perfection won the race, beating the odds-on favourite Mishni Twilight.

Ross and Crooks have saved QLD 2YO racing by organizing new races.

Skirt The Law won The Debut at Doomben on Saturday. It was the first time the filly was trained by Tony Gollan. Magic Millions pocketed $79,000 for the win and will spend the rest on the Women In Racing bonus in the Magic Million 2YO Classic in January.
