Hill Sixteen Grand National Odds & Betting Profile

Sandy Thomson's Hill Sixteen is a ten-year-old gelding set to run in the 2023 Grand National at Aintree on Saturday 15th April. We profile the veteran performer here and take a look at his recent form, as well as his career statistics and pedigree ahead of a crack at the world's greatest steeplechase on Merseyside...

Age: 10

Trainer: Sandy Thomson

Chase Runs: 19

Chase Wins: 2

Hill Sixteen is a fascinating outsider in the Grand National Odds, as while he will be having his first crack at the Grand National in 2023 he has a marvellous record over the world famous Aintree National fences. A sparkling runner-up to Snow Leopardess in the 2021 Becher Chase, where he was beaten by a nose, the Sandy Thomson-trained raider returned to that event in 2022 looking to go one better in the Becher, but he could only finish seventh. However, he showed he can excel over the obstacles and so he's entitled to be given a lively each-way chance for this year's Grand National.

He may not be the first on the list of Grand National Tips, but he's sure to put up a bold effort and having finished third in a competitive Kelso handicap chase on his comeback run he then went on to the Becher Chase, where he ran creditably. He failed to fire last time out on his return to Kelso, as he finished last of ten, but a return to Liverpool should see him at his best.

A winner in four of his 26 career starts under Rules, Hill Sixteen has only been victorious in two of his 19 chase races, but the unique idiosyncrasies of Aintree's National course can see certain performers flourish and he looks one that looks tailor-made for a tilt at the notable prize. A winner over three miles, this extra distance is an unknown and his last run is slightly worrying, but he's an intriguing contender for this contest and has to be respected.
