Horse Racing Tips: Best Betting Tips for Tuesday

For today's horse racing tips, our analyst James Boyle looks at the flat racing meeting at Pontefract, with three selections now online.

As always, you’ll find the most up-to-date odds at the best , but don’t sleep on our tipster’s predictions as those odds could soon be gobbled up by the betting public. Odds stated are correct at the time of publishing.

14:00 Pontefract – Big Cheese – 1pt @ 12/1

Big Cheese makes his handicap debut and although he’s not the easiest to assess after his three runs for a mark, he did perform better than the book would suggest when last seen at Nottingham. He made good headway up the centre of the track to challenge some talented rivals but weakened away tamely in the closing stages, giving off the impression that the 1m 6f trip was stretching him.

That was heavy ground according to Timeform so today’s conditions won’t be a problem and the shorter distance should be in his favour. An opening mark of 67 looks lenient enough on what he has achieved and although we haven’t seen him on the track since October, the yard are going along well with 8 winners from 23 runners this year. If he’s fit, he’s weighted to do something here.

We've Ranked The

15:30 Pontefract – King Of Bavaria – 1pt @ 4/1

King Of Bavaria has been easy to back this morning and I think he’s a fair bet now. A formerly promising juvenile for Ballydoyle, he was picked up by Mick Appleby in October and has done well in three runs since, especially last time when second to Diligent Harry back in handicap company. He couldn’t cope with the talented winner but was less than a length behind at the line.

Getting off the All-Weather and back onto turf should be a help, and the soft ground could be another favourable angle based on his juvenile wins. There are some speedy runners in opposition who could set things up nicely for one who stays further than the minimum trip and I just hope he can get a good position from his gate, which wouldn’t be a certainty. 4/1 seems fair enough to me all the same.

17:05 Pontefract – Little Jo – 1pt @ 10/1

Little Jo hasn’t won for a long time but he’s on a good mark and is now 9lbs lower than when second in this race last season. That came on the back of a longer break as he was kept on the go this winter, last seen racing at the end of January, and hopefully he’ll be somewhere near his peak level of fitness. If he is, there’s no doubting he’s rated to be a major player and soft ground suits him better than most.

Twelve runs at this track have yielded five top three finishes (one win) and he was unfortunate not to get closer on his last visit here in October when the winner cut across his path in the straight. The figure he posted then from a 2lb higher mark would make him the one to beat here if it was replicated and 10/1 about that happening is worthwhile. If all goes to plan, he should be in the mix late on.
