Howbeit, Mike Smith win Santa Anita Sprint Championship

Howbeit won the $200,000 Grade II Santa Anita Sprint Championship by a nose under Mike Smith. C Z Rocket finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Keeneland. It was the first time Smith was aboard the winner. Forbidden Kingdom finished fifth in a six-horse lineup. He was even-money favorite. His trainer, Mark Glatt, was confident he would win. The horse has won four of 12 races at Santa Monica and two of nine since he was claimed by Glatts for $32,00 in February 2021.

Masteroffoxhounds won the John Henry Turf Championship by a neck over Dicey Mo Chara. Masteroff Roxhound hadn't won since a 1.5-length victory in the Grade II San Marcos Stakes at Santa Anita in February 2021. Gold Phoenix finished second in a time of 1:59.79.

Beyond Brilliant won the City of Hope Mile for trainer John Shirreffs. It was his second Grade II in his past three starts. Mike Smith won Santa Anita Sprint Championship.

Whatmakessammyrun, the second-longest shot on the board at 18-1, gave Glatt his second stakes victory of the day. Joe Bravo was aboard for the three-quarter length victory over Lane Way in the $200,000 Grade II race.
