D’Amato brings it on the turf with Irish-breds
Prince Abama won the Hollywood Turf Cup Nov. 26 at Del Mar.
Prince Abama is the favorite in Monday's Grade II, $200,000 San Gabriel stakes at Santa Anita. Trainer Phil D’Amato has become a dominant force on turf. D'Amatos also will ride Masteroffoxhounds and Bob and Jackie. The last year's winner Bob & Jackie is out of action. It was well beaten over the course in the Grade I Frank E. Kilroe Mile March 5. The horse is owned by Rockingham Ranch.

Balnikhov won the Grade III Bryan Station Stakes at Keeneland Oct. 29. Richard Mandella's Sumter won both the April 2 Singletary and Feb. 19 Pasadena Stake at Santa Anita. Sumer is a 3-year-old colt by top turf sire War Front bred in Kentucky by Bass Stables, LLC. He will be reunited with Mike Smith, who rode him to his Singleary victory and third place finish in the La Jolla Handicap.
