Hurricanes vs Red Wings: NHL review, odds, score prediction

The Detroit Red Wings used their third-period scoring power to capture an impressive road win on Tuesday in St. Louis. Tonight, the Wings take on the Carolina Hurricanes at Little Caesars Arena, in a game that has Detroit as underdogs according to oddsmakers.

The Hurricanes have a well-disciplined defense and a solid goalie in Pyotr Kochetkov, the Russian known for his sprawling, athletic style of play in the crease. Last year, Carolina advanced to the Conference Finals on the strength of their aggressive play. For that reason, the Canes are favored in Detroit.

The Red Wings are banged up: Dylan Larkin, Klim Kostin, J.T. Compher, and Matt Luff are all on injured reserve. That’s a big chunk of several lines that Derek Lalonde normally writes on his lineup card. Yet, Detroit managed to put up six goals on Tuesday against the Blues. That’s due to their penchant for creating quality scoring opportunities.

Though the Red Wings rank 15th in shots on goal, the Red Wings are second in the NHL in shooting percentage. Lalonde has his team taking the best shots, and often they convert (12.5% of the time, as a matter of fact).

Carolina may be a good matchup: so far in this young season, the Hurricanes rank last in the league in save percentage. The Canes win because they tend to limit shots on goal, not because Kochetkov is great at stopping the puck. On Thursday, we’ll see if the Wings can convert high percentage shots close to the net.

  • Detroit is 15-8 against the spread (ATS)
  • The OVER has hit in five of Detroit’s last seven games
  • The Wings rank second in the NHL in scoring, at 3.79 goals per game (GPG)
  • Detroit is 2-5 against Carolina dating back to 2022. They are 2-4 in their last six games as a favorite against the Hurricanes.
  • The Hurricanes have scored 91 goals, and allowed 91 goals.
  • Carolina is last in save percentage
  • Only 10 NHL teams have a lower opponents’ shooting percentage than the Hurricanes.

Detroit is an underdog at home against the Hurricanes but largely based on reputation. The IR also matters, as Detroit is without Larkin and other key players. Still, we project the Red Wings will find a way to grind out a victory over one of the better teams in the NHL tonight in the Motor City.
