Red Wings vs. Kings: NHL preview, odds, score prediction

The second game of a five-day, three-game road trip is slated for tonight in Los Angeles between the Red Wings and Kings. Detroit is the underdog against one of the better teams in the NHL. Detroit is coming off an impressive 5-3 victory over the Sharks on Tuesday. In that contest, the Wings offense came to life, and coach Derek Lalonde hopes it portends a new phase in the season.

Mlive’s top NHL sportsbooks list odds on just about anything you can think of for NHL hockey. You can find odds for first goal scorer; alternate spread; total goals by period; shootout result; points by any player of your choice, and much more. For example, Alex DeBrincat is +210 to score a goal, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Or hop on the hot stick of Detroit’s David Perron at +420 to score a goal against the Kings. That means you’ll earn $420 on a $100 winning bet.

Even if you don’t yet have a FanDuel account, register and receive $150 in Bonus Bets when you make a $5 bet on either the NFL or NBA. Think the Detroit Lions are going to knock off the Vikings on Sunday at home? Wager $5 with FanDuel, and you’ll instantly get $150 to use on your NHL betting.

The Red Wings are the third-highest scoring team in the NHL. They have the second-best shooting percentage in the league, and since they rank 14th in shots, that means the Wings are opportunistic.

It’s a matchup of the best defensive unit in the league and a precision offense. BetMGM Sportsbook lists the Red Wings at +155 on the moneyline, with Los Angeles priced at -190. Those odds have been shifting as we near the drop of the puck. It appears the early money has been on Detroit. The Over/Under or Total is set at six goals. We think there’s an opportunity there for a sharp hockey bettor.

The Wings will have Alex Lyon behind the mask in the crease on Thursday evening. The netminder is having a resurgent season for Detroit, but his opponent is even better.

Cam Talbot is the top-ranked goalie in the NHL based on Goals Saved Above Average, according to Evolving-Hockey. The former All-Star is on his fourth team in the last five seasons, and at age 36 has seemed to have located the Fountain of Youth. The Kings (20-9-5), but only 7-8-3 on their home ice. If that’s something the Wings can take advantage of, they better, because the Kings allow the fewest shots and fewest goals in the league.

Patrick Kane hasn’t scored a point in either of his last two games, and has been in the headlines more for a possible contract extension to remain in Detroit than he has for his play of late. Kane skates on a line with J.T. Compher and Alex DeBrincat. That trio may be the key to a victory over the Kings at Crypto.com Arena.

In his last nine games, team captain Dylan Larkin has only two goals. It’s no wonder: the center has just 29 shots on goal in nearly three hours of ice time. That trend will end on Thursday in the shadows of Hollywood, when Larkin picks on the LA Kings.

Wager $50, and if Larkin scores a goal at any point in regulation or OT, you win $320 (including your stake).

Yes, the Kings are stingy at allowing goals. And yes, the Red Wings are a lesser talented team. But, Detroit flashed a nice power play on Tuesday in a win in the northern part of the state. Now, it’s time for a red letter win in SoCal. We like the OVER 96 goals from FanDuel). Odds for the OVER/UNDER are -110.
