Japan upset Germany 2-1 in the opening round of the World Cup. Japan is aiming for the knockout stage. Costa Rica is playing against Germany in its final match. If Costa Costa loses, it will be eliminated from the tournament. It is Costa Rican's sixth World cup and reached the quarterfinals in 2014 in Brazil. It has reached round the 16 three times, including in Russia in 2018. This is Japan's seventh straight World Cups. The team has lost three previous World Championships. Its last defeat came in 2002. it was against Turkiye.
