Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance, and the San Francisco 49ers’ QB Dilemma

Jimmy Garoppolo is the new San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback. He will start against the Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football. Trey Lance is out for the season with a broken ankle. The 49er's record with Garppolo starting is 35-16, while their record without him is 9-29. The team's winning percentage with him at the helm is 69 percent. After this season, Garopolo can leave as an unrestricted free agent. Lance will be eligible for a contract extension. Since Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch took over the team in 2017, the performance with and without Gar opponnt has been the difference between being a Super Bowl contender and one of the league's worst teams.

Trey Lance has played just 21 football games since high school. He played 16 games at North Dakota State in 2019. His other four seasons in the past five years have been very limited. Since leaving highschool, Lance threw 420 passes. Trevor Lawrence has thrown more than three times as many passes in that period. The 49ers need to decide on a contract extension for Lance after 2023. Jimmy Garoppolo, the new 49er quarterback, has a lot of potential. However, he has some serious injury problems.

The 49ers traded three first-round picks and a third-rounder to take Lance in 2021. The 2021 pick went to Dallas, who used it on Micah Parsons. Lance is recovering from an ankle injury and is still learning the NFL. Jimmy Garoppolo's next turn starts this Sunday night. The 49er's are back to where they were before the Lance trade. They are all in on Jimmy to win now. If he doesn't, he can prove a lot by staying healthy. He could get a big contract like Kirk Cousins got from Minnesota. Carolina might overpay him in free agency. It's painful for 49ERS fans to realize their team could have taken Micaha Parsons in the 2021 and paired him with Nick Bosa.
