Premiership-leading jockey Tyler Schiller has warned punters not to overlook imported stayer Canberra Legend when the former English-trained galloper steps out for the first time under champion trainer Chris Waller at Newcastle on Saturday.

Canberra Legend was sent around the $4.20 favourite when beaten just over two lengths in the $750,000 Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m) in his Aussie debut for Newmarket trainer James Ferguson.

Schiller, who only weeks before had booted home Canberra Legend's stablemate Land Legend for the UK trainer, replaces Kerrin McEvoy who is at Caulfield on Saturday to partner Arctic Glamour in the Thousand Guineas.

"Watching the replay I'm not so sure he was as disappointing as some people seem to think he was," Schiller said.

"He was tardy away and then worked forward the other day and I thought he stuck on pretty well considering the work he did early.

"I haven't spoken to Chris but from a better draw maybe we tuck him in behind the speed and hopefully we won't have to do too much work.

"I'm sure he will appreciate a bit more of an even tempo and the step up in trip."

Canberra Legend and Land Legend are both staying in Australia to do their future racing with Waller.

Land Legend is already in the paddock after making a winning start to life Down Under while Canberra Legend is also heading for the summer grass after Saturday's $300,000 The Beaumont (2300m).

"He's a nice big strong horse and I don't doubt the staying ability of English horses," Waller said.

"James wasn't too disappointed with the horse's performance in the Rosehill Gold Cup, he just thought he's a horse that needs further.

"He was actually quite surprised he was as short as he was in betting.

"We are making the most of the fitness he's got and the condition James (Ferguson) sent him out in."

"We won't go any further than Saturday but hopefully he can show us enough to be on a Sydney Cup preparation in the autumn."
