We’re just minutes away from race six, the Sydney Stakes, at Royal Randwick.

A field of 16 in this race, and Bella Nipotina ridden by Craig Williams is the favourite paying $4.60.

She’s followed by I am Me, the five-year-old mare ridden by James McDonald and trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace who’s paying $5.50.

That was a blistering display of speed from Front Page, who goes back-to-back in The Kosciuszko.

It’s a bit different this time with his former trainer, Geoff Duryea, retiring from the sport earlier this year, with the horse transferred to the care of Goulburn trainer Matt Dale.

But for jockey Tyler Schiller, it’s been one helluva day as his star continues to rise.

Half-way through the card and this track is fast. Very fast. Those horses settling in the second half of the field are struggling to make a lot of ground.

And word has just come through the track has officially been upgraded to a Good (3). That doesn’t happen often these days. Overpass for The Everest, anyone?

The shadow of Black Caviar will always follow Peter Moody, and nothing will compare to her legend.

Moody will return to Randwick on Saturday with another incredible sprinter, I Wish I Win, which is the $4 favourite for The Everest.

“It’s a totally different ballgame. The pressure that was around her was unique because she was undefeated,” Moody said of Black Caviar. “This bloke [I Wish I Win] has been beaten quite a few times, and he will be beaten again.

“It is chalk and cheese. He’s a good horse – she [Black Caviar] was unique.

“We would have probably bought a slot if The Everest was around when she was racing. I would have been foolish not to.

“Neil [Werrett, Black Caviar’s managing owner] has got one [Private Eye] and I think [Black Caviar’s success] had something to do with that.”

I Wish I Win will earn $7 million with a victory on Saturday. Black Caviar’s career earnings were $7.9 million in her unbeaten 25-start career.

We’re an hour and a half away from The Everest, but which horse will win?

We’re almost halfway through the day’s action, with race five - The Kosciuszko - up next at Randwick.

Four-year-old mare Opal Ridge is the favourite for that race, paying $2.80. She’s by James McDonald and trained by Luke Pepper.

The next closest to her is the seven-year-old gelding Front Page, who is paying $6.00 and is ridden by Tyler Schiller, who won the first race of the day on Land Legend and also snagged a third on Broadcaster in race three.

Working in finance Robert Lee knows where to invest, particularly when the pay-off could be a prize in Everest’s Fashion Stakes.

“I won in 2019.” Lee says. “The trick is to go hard on the accessories.”

Lee is wearing a a three-piece custom suit from Peppers Formal Wear in Cremorne and a hat from Kathryn Lee Millinery.

“Sometimes the judges can get grumpy about supporting family members, but you have to represent.”

The finishing touch is a cane from an Amsterdam flea market with a secret compartment beneath the screw top handle. Despite the concealed container, Lee was able to wander past sniffer dogs at the racecourse with ease.

“I’ve only got money in here for a safe flutter,” he says.

It was a photo finish for third, but Cap Ferrat just beats out Kintyre for a spot in the top three.

When we look back at the end of the day, Arctic Glamour might be the horse to follow.

She’s a serious filly and co-trainer Gerald Ryan said jockey Kerrin McEvoy had a simple message after he rode her in her last win at Rosehill.

“I’ll go anywhere to ride this horse,” McEvoy said.

Turns out he only had to go down the road to Royal Randwick, and she was far too good for her rivals in the Reginald Allen Quality.

That won’t be her last stakes win as she heads towards the Thousand Guineas.
