In a report late Tuesday from The Athletic, the outlet reported Messi’s deal would “likely include” an option to purchase a share of an MLS team once his playing time comes to an end.

The reports indicate it’s more than just a money deal for Messi, with an MLS stakeholder source telling The Athletic that the league is getting “very creative with all of this.”

“Both sides view Messi’s potential involvement in Major League Soccer as a boon; Apple and MLS signed a 10-year, $2.5 billion agreement this spring,” The Athletic reported. “On Tuesday, Apple revealed that a four-part docuseries chronicling Messi’s five World Cup appearances would stream on Apple TV+.”

It is unclear when Messi would make his Inter Miami debut. The club hosts the New England Revolution on Saturday.

PSG signed Messi in 2021 after 21 years with FC Barcelona. In two seasons in Paris, Messi helped Paris Saint-Germain win back-to-back Ligue 1 titles, recording 22 goals and 30 assists and 58 matches.

There were reports of Messi potentially joining Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. A reunion with Barcelona also reportedly was on the table.

Messi passed Cristiano Ronaldo for most goals in a Top 5 league when he scored No. 496 in his final game with PSG that helped the club to its 11th French League title.
