Liverpool vs Everton predictions

For the last two weeks this fixture has been the talk of Merseyside. The October international break made for a longer build-up than usual, as Liverpool and Everton prepare to renew hostilities this weekend.

As ever, the Reds head into the fixture as the favourites. Jurgen Klopp's side are fourth in the Premier League table after eight rounds of games, with just three points separating them from Tottenham Hotspur in top spot. They will go top, at least temporarily, with a win in this match.

Liverpool have lost just once so far, and that 2-1 defeat by Spurs came with a last-minute winner and only after the visitors to north London had been reduced to nine men.

After a much-needed midfield rebuild over the summer, Liverpool are aiming to challenge for the title again this term. The first few weeks of the campaign suggest they are ready to do just that.

Klopp’s team will be pretty confident of victory when Everton make the short trip to Anfield.

This has been a one-sided fixture in recent years. Liverpool have lost just one of the last 28 meetings with their neighbours stretching back for more than 13 years.

Everton have fared particularly badly at Anfield. They triumphed there during the pandemic era but have not won a game in front of a full house since September 1999.

Sean Dyche will hope to give the club’s supporters something to cheer on derby day, but Everton fans have grown used to disappointment when they take on their adversaries from across Stanley Park.

And given how both teams have started the season, it is hard to see Saturday’s match bucking the trend.

📝 Liverpool vs Everton betting tips

Liverpool should come out on top when they lock horns with Everton for the first time in the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Liverpool to win and both teams to score - 6/4 (bet365)

It is still too early to tell whether Everton will be involved in yet another relegation battle this season.

Having watched their team spend the last two years battling against the drop until the final week of the campaign, Everton fans were hoping for something calmer this time around.

After eight games they are only three points and two places above the drop zone, yet that does not tell the full story of their season to date.

Indeed, Everton would be much higher up the standings if they were not so profligate in front of goal.

They have scored just nine times up to now, yet the Toffees sit ninth in the expected goals table, having created chances of comparable quality to Arsenal and Manchester City.

That will give Everton confidence that they can at least find the net on Saturday, but avoiding defeat by Liverpool will be tough.

As we mentioned above, their record in this particular fixture is pitiful. Liverpool, meanwhile, have won five out of five at home in all competitions in 2023/24.

In addition the Reds have won eight of their last nine, and 10 of their last 12, Premier League games at Anfield.

More goals in the first half - 2/1 (bet365)

Most goals in football matches are scored after half-time. You can find odds of 20/21 on that being the case at Anfield on Saturday, compared to 2/1 for more goals before the break.

Yet the latter wager could prove to be fantastic value on this occasion.

The sample size is small, but it is interesting to note that both Liverpool and Everton’s matches so far this season have featured more goals between minutes one and 45 than between minutes 46 and 90.

Liverpool’s games have had a league-high 16 in the first half compared to 11 in the second. For Everton the respective figures are 12 and nine.

There is another reason to consider this bet. Liverpool will be keen to make a fast start in their first match back after the international break, not least because they can go top with a win.

If the Reds are able to establish a healthy lead by the interval, they will focus on protecting that advantage in the second period.

Trent Alexander-Arnold to score or assist - 6/5 (bet365)

After a few weeks out injured, Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to the starting XI for Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion prior to the international break.

He was also involved for England in the 1-0 friendly victory over Australia last weekend and must be very close to full match fitness once more.

That is a major boost for Liverpool. For all his defensive shortcomings, Alexander-Arnold is perhaps the most creative full-back in world football.

The 25-year-old was not at his best last term, yet he still managed to provide nine assists in the Premier League - only six players in the division contributed more.

Liverpool have scored 18 goals in their eight games up to now. They possess an abundance of attacking options and should ultimately have too much quality up top for Everton to handle.

Alexander-Arnold is not a forward in name, but he would be a smart pick to be directly involved in a Liverpool goal on Saturday.
