Reds look more reliable than Pochettino’s work in progress

Chelsea welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge for their opening game of the new Premier League season and there are plenty of talking points for this Sunday teatime kick-off.

Mauricio Pochettino will see a familiar foe across the Stamford Bridge technical area when he takes Chelsea into a competitive battle for the first time after a summer of big changes.

The Argentinian has lost four consecutive contests against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, including the fateful Champions League final defeat of 2019 that marked the beginning of the end of his five-and-a-half-year stint at Tottenham.

He must show what lessons he has learnt from those matches, and his subsequent time at Paris Saint-Germain, in a clash that could give plenty of pointers to the direction of travel for both clubs.

Klopp will be feeling the heat too after his team fell short of the top four last term, but the German has seemingly addressed the area of greatest concern in ruthless fashion by changing the entire composition of his first-choice midfield.

The arrival of Alexis Mac Allister, who destroyed Chelsea’s midfield twice while at Brighton last season, as well as Dominic Szoboszlai, lifts Liverpool’s quality to a level higher than anything their likely direct opponents, Enzo Fernandez and Conor Gallagher, achieved in tandem last term.

The duo started together in the Blues’ final nine Premier League games of the 2022-23 season and finished on the winning side only once as Chelsea lost six of the contests.

Arresting a malaise that began under other managers but ended with only one win in their last 10 top-flight games will be a major task for Pochettino, so avoiding defeat will be tough here against a reinvigorated Reds side that triumphed in three of their final four away games last term.

Goals could still be problem for careless Blues

Discovering the right chemistry in midfield is not even the biggest issue that Pochettino must solve, with Chelsea still apparently lacking a high-calibre goalscorer.

The recent injury to Christopher Nkunku will pile all the pressure on fellow new boy Nicolas Jackson on his Premier League debut, although Blues fans believe he cannot fail to improve upon what they got from Kai Havertz in the central role last season.

Chelsea’s goalscoring problems run deeper than just one man, though, with the team underperforming their xG by almost 14 goals across the 38-game season.

They scored more than once in only two of their last 12 home league matches of the campaign and not at all in either clash with Liverpool.

The previous four meetings between them have all finished goalless, but the Reds created big enough chances to have won by a couple at Stamford Bridge in the most recent skirmish between these clubs.

A win to nil for the Reds must be a consideration given Chelsea’s problems when it comes to putting the ball in the net, but one or two members of Klopp’s regular defence are not as dominant as they once were. So backing the visitors to win with fewer than four goals in the game should suffice at a nice odds-against price.

Side with Salah in bet builder

Trent Alexander-Arnold could have his work cut out covering Mykhailo Mudryk when possession changes hands if, as is expected, he moves into central midfield when Liverpool have the ball.

He was only carded five times in the Premier League last season, but two of those came in the final nine games when he was asked to play in the hybrid role.

Mohamed Salah has scored in two of his last three top-flight starts against his former club and has been among the goals in pre-season too, but his prowess in setting up goals cannot be overlooked.

He was second only to Kevin De Bruyne in the Premier League assists chart last term with 12, and ought to be involved in any successful moves for the visitors on Sunday.

Combining these two legs with Liverpool to produce five or more shots on target, which they did in seven of their final 10 league games of 2022-23, boosts the bet builder odds to 10/1.
