Looking back on memorable Formula 1 contract deals

Oscar Piastri was signed by McLaren to a contract. Formula 1 contracts are not always about money but can be the beginning of huge careers or not.

Jean Alesi arrived on the F1 scene in 1989 with Tyrrell. Williams wanted to sign him but Ayrton Senna's deal was already done. Alesi signed with Ferrari instead. Ferrari had to pay millions in compensation to Williams to make the deal happen.

Jordan signed Michael Schumacher from Mercedes in 1991. Benetton broke the contract and he switched to Ferrari. He won two Formula 1 titles at Ferrari between 1994 and 1995.

Jensen Button was a rising star in 2000. He had stints with Benetton and BAR. Button wanted to return to Williams, but the team's slump in form saw him stay with BAR, which became Honda. In 2005, Button won his first Grand Prix with Honda, who withdrew. Brawn was formed and Button became a world champion.

Sauber signed three drivers for 2015. Giedo van der Garde won a case in court to be one of the two drivers. He was paid millions in compensation.
