Thursday, February 2nd, the Los Angeles Lakers and Indiana Pacers play for the second and final time this season. The Pacers won the original November 28th meeting 115-114 in spectacular fashion.

The Lakers last played Tuesday defeating the Knicks 129-123 in overtime while Indy has been off since Sunday when they lost 100-112 to the Grizzlies

The Lakers hold the all-time record between the clubs with 63 wins in 97 meetings. Last season, the teams played twice with the teams splitting the two-game regular season series.

*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Wednesday, February 1st. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Thursday, February 2nd.

Los Angeles Lakers

As I predicted the Lakers ended up on the winning side of the hardwood in New York as the Knicks continue to play at MSG as if they’re the road team.

LeBron James collected his first triple-double of this season with 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists while continuing to move up the list in the history books.

During the game, James moved to fourth on all-assists (10,339 and counting) passing Mark Jackson (10,334) and Steve Nash (10,335).

The trio in front of him aren’t likely to be caught are the active Chris Paul (11,246), plus Hall of Famers Jason Kidd (12,091), and  John Stockton (15,806).

James needs 89 points to break the all-time scoring record held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Stats

On the negative side, LA allows opponents to score an average of 118.3 points per game ranking 27th. Their opponents shoot 47.2% from the field and 34.6% from behind the arc ranking 13th and second respectively.

Another key point, the Lakers score 117.0 points per game which ranks 5th best while shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from the perimeter ranking ninth and 26th respectively.

Patrick Beverley (knee) and Anthony Davis (foot) were upgraded to probable while LeBron James (ankle) is questionable for Thursday. Austin Reaves (hamstring) is out indefinitely.

Indiana Pacers

Some big news is coming out of Indiana and it’s not just the surprising contract renegotiation of Myles Turner. Rather, the larger revelation was Tyrese Haliburton was upgraded from out indefinitely to questionable to the most recent update of PROBABLE for Thursday.

Indy was 1-9 while Haliburton was out with elbow and knee injuries and while they fought, six of those losses were by double-digits.

As for Turner, the big man is still eligible to be traded on February 9th but that seems highly unlikely since the Pacers would very likely be investigated for tampering.

Here is a breakdown of the Myles Turner renegotiation.

Because this was a renegotiation, Indiana was allowed to decrease the salary in the first year of the extension to 40%.

I say this because Turner’s contract was renegotiated to front-load it with the benefit being it frees up cap space in years 2 and 3 to utilize elsewhere. If he is now traded at the deadline it will seem like this move occurred potentially at the request of a trade partner.

That said, it’s equally likely Kevin Pritchard did that to help their own cap in those two years to use in free agency spending or in negotiating contract extensions of the existing core.

Stats

The Pacers average 115.1 points per game (10th) while shooting 45.8% from the field (24th) and 36.1% from deep (14th).

Defensively, Indy allows 117.2 points per game (25th) while opponents shoot 47.4% from the field (16th) and 37.3% from the perimeter (28th).

Haliburton (elbow) and Daniel Theis (knee) were both upgraded to probable and questionable respectively. Kendall Brown (tibia fracture) is out.

Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Indiana Pacers NBA Prediction:

Looking back to the first meeting between these clubs it was arguably the most exciting win for the Pacers this season as Andrew Nembhard hit the buzzer-beating, 3-point game-winner.

With Haliburton updated to probable, that’s big but he’ll likely be on a minute restriction. Still, there’s nothing like LeBron James and the Lakers to motivate a young team.
