As can be seen, Wednesday, January 18th, finds the Indiana Pacers facing the OKC Thunder for the first of two scheduled matches. The Pacers will host the second contest on March 31st

Altogether, the Pacers last played Monday losing 119-132 to the Bucks while the Thunder last played Sunday registering a huge 112-102 victory versus the Nets.

In history, the Thunder owns the advantage of winning 52 of the clubs’ 95 meetings. Last season the teams played twice with the teams splitting the two contests.

*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Tuesday evening, January 17th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Wednesday, January 18th.

Indiana Pacers

As a result, while the Cinderella Pacers are one of my favorite League Pass teams they’ve sputtered without their cornerstone Tyrese Haliburton. Also, his injuries (elbow/knee) occurred in the January 11th match that Indy lost plus all three he’s been out since.

Myles Turner returned from a three-game absence to make an immediate impact leading the team with 30 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and four blocks plus he shot 5 of 9 from deep.

In addition, T.J. McConnell served up a career-best 29 points (and nine assists) but Indy failed to finish strong losing the final frame by 18 points (39-21).

In short, Rick Carlisle stated the Grizzlies ‘may be the best team on the planet’ so it’s not a stretch to assume he’d like his young team to emulate their success and the one area they haven’t solved yet is winning when the best player(s) is out.

Stats

Until now, the Pacers averaged 115.5 points per game ranking 10th while shooting 46.0% from the field and 36.5% from the perimeter which ranks 23rd and 11th respectively.

Also, defensively, Indy allows 116.3 points which rank 22nd while these opponents shoot 46.8% from the field and 37.0% from the perimeter ranking 10th and 28th.

To summarize the injuries, Tyrese Haliburton (elbow/knee sprains), Kendall Brown (tibia fracture), and Daniel Theis (knee) are out indefinitely.

OKC Thunder

At season start the Jazz occupied the Cinderella position in the West, but the Thunder may have overtaken that position given their play of late.

Utah has the higher seed at the moment but only by a half-game and the Thunder are the hotter team going 10 of 15 (five of the last six).

Not only is this youthful squad led by the talented Shai Gilgeous-Alexander creeping up on a play-in berth — they are only 1.5 games out of sixth place!

Stats

OKC allows 116.0 points per game ranking 21st. They allow opponents to shoot 46.4% from the field and 35.5% from deep which ranks ranking sixth and 13th respectively.

On the positive side, the Thunder scores 116.8 points per game which rank ninth overall. So far, in terms of shooting efficiency, they rank 20th from the field shooting 46.5%, and 17th from the perimeter shooting 35.7%.

At this time, Ousmane Dieng (wrist) and Eugene Omoruyi (back) are questionable. Aleksej Pokusevski (leg), and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (ankle) are out. Chet Holmgren, (foot surgery) will miss the entire season.

Free Indiana Pacers vs. OKC Thunder NBA Prediction:

Additionally, it’s unfortunate fans won’t get to witness this match with everyone healthy and hopefully that’s the case when they play in March.

Also, Indy will still fight and OKC is returning from a road stint, but it was only four games long so they shouldn’t fall victim to the first game back trap.

All in all, I’d feel more comfortable if the spread was one point lower but the Thunder are playing with so much confidence I can’t ignore that fact.
