Manchester City vs Bayern Munich predictions

This is a game you will not want to miss.

Manchester City and Bayern Munich are two of the strongest sides in Europe, and there are likely to be fireworks at the Etihad Stadium and the Allianz Arena over the next couple of weeks.

City are the favourites to win the Champions League, which is a familiar status for Pep Guardiola’s side.

But in recent seasons City have continually fallen short in Europe’s premier competition, despite the fact that many have held them up as the best team on the continent.

After all, City have won four of the last five Premier League titles, and they gained ground on Arsenal at the weekend in this season’s race.

But they keep coming up short in the Champions League. After losing the 2021 final to Chelsea, a team they finished 19 points clear of domestically, City were on the receiving end of a stunning Real Madrid comeback in last term’s semis.

Can they finally get over the line this time around? That remains to be seen, but City have a devilishly difficult path to the Istanbul showpiece.

Even if they get past Bayern in this two-legged quarter-final, City will probably face Madrid, the reigning champions, in the last four.

If Guardiola’s men are to finally break their European duck, they will have to do it the hard way.

Manchester City vs Bayern Munich betting tips

Manchester City and Bayern Munich will both go on the attack on Tuesday, which should lead to a fantastic match for neutrals.

Manchester City to win and both teams to score – 11/5 (bet365)

Julian Nagelsmann’s sacking as Bayern Munich manager last month came as a surprise.

This has by no means been a perfect campaign for Bayern, whose lead at the summit of the Bundesliga standings is more precarious than normal.

But Bayern were still in a decent position to win three trophies when the club’s hierarchy decided to make the change.

In fairness, they swapped one top-class coach for another. Thomas Tuchel is less of a project manager than Nagelsmann, but there are few better at making an instant impact.

The former Chelsea head coach oversaw a decisive 4-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in his first game at the helm, and he will now be looking to win the second Champions League of his career.

Bayern will not simply sit back and defend at the Etihad Stadium. We can expect them to try and take the game to Manchester City whenever possible, with plenty of bodies committed to attack.

In turn, City will play their usual game, so despite the high-stakes nature of Champions League knockout ties, this should be an absorbing, entertaining affair.

Goals at both ends is a distinct possibility. But with home advantage behind them, City could just edge out Bayern in Tuesday’s first leg.

Over 1.5 goals first half – 11/8 (bet365)

The first half of Tuesday’s match is in fact only the first quarter of the tie. With so much football still to be played, opening halves of first legs are often cagey affairs.

That might not be the case on this occasion, however. Under the floodlights at the Etihad, City will look to make a quick start in a bid to establish an early advantage.

Bayern are more than capable of fighting fire with fire. Their counter-attacking prowess should not be underestimated, with Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala, Sadio Mane and Serge Gnabry all dangerous in transition.

Rather than starting slow and then speeding up as time wears on, this match could begin at a lightning pace before settling into a more controlled rhythm after 20 or 30 minutes.

There is reason to believe, then, that we could be treated to at least two goals in the first period.

Bayern are certainly adept at hitting the ground running. They have scored 72 first-half goals in 40 matches this term, an average of 1.8 per game.

The Bavarians have by far and away the best record in the Bundesliga from minutes one to 45, but only the ninth-best after the interval.

City have scored in the opening period in 11 of their last 12 outings, so a sluggish start to his clash is unlikely.

Serge Gnabry to score any time – 7/2 (bet365)

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is a strong doubt for Tuesday’s match after the Bayern striker picked up a knee injury in the recent DFB-Pokal defeat by Freiburg.

Tuchel would no doubt rather have the centre-forward available in the squad, but Bayern might actually be better off without him at the Etihad.

The deployment of Gnabry up top would give the visitors a more fluid frontline and additional pace through the middle.

That could unsettle a City defence that has not been put under too much pressure over the last few weeks.

Gnabry’s last goal for his club was in the 2-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of Bayern’s last-16 tie.

He has not exactly been prolific since the World Cup, but the former Arsenal man is an excellent player whose movement, skill and speed make him a difficult opponent for any backline.
