Unlike the three other English representatives in this season’s Champions League - Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United - Manchester City have their feet up ahead of matchday five.

Six teams have already qualified for the knockout phase of the competition and both City and RB Leipzig are among them. Arsenal, United and Newcastle all have varying levels of work to do.

Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Pep Guardiola’s men are the three sides with a 100 percent record after four rounds of fixtures. Not coincidentally, they are also the three favourites to lift the trophy at Wembley Stadium next year.

City are the holders and are thus seeking to become only the second club in the Champions League era to claim the prize in consecutive seasons.

It is a feat that only Real Madrid, who have been crowned as the kings of the continent on 14 occasions, have achieved up to now.

Do not write City off, though. They have probably been the best team in Europe over the last three or four years, even if they have not consistently won the Champions League in that period.

And although they are not currently top of the Premier League, it is hard to argue that this City side is lacking hunger after their treble success last time out.

Winning three trophies again will be difficult and the Premier League title is by no means a given when you consider how hard Liverpool and Arsenal are pushing.

But no one would relish facing Guardiola’s charges over two legs in a knockout tie. Group G was never going to pose them too many problems, but a record of four wins from four and a goal difference of +9 is still impressive. City remain the team to beat in the Champions League.

Manchester City can make it five wins from five in the Champions League when they host RB Leipzig this week.

Manchester City saw their 23-match winning streak at the Etihad Stadium come to an end at the weekend.

Liverpool became the first visiting team in 2023 to deny City victory in front of their own fans. Erling Haaland gave the Premier League champions the lead in the first half, but Trent Alexander-Arnold earned Jurgen Klopp’s men a point with a fine strike in the 80th minute.

It was a frustrating result for City. Combined with Arsenal’s 1-0 triumph over Brentford, it knocked them off top spot. Another test awaits when Tottenham Hotspur visit the Etihad this weekend.

That fixture will be on Guardiola’s mind even ahead of the RB Leipzig game. Indeed, we could see the City boss keep some of his regular starters fresh by withdrawing them from the XI on Tuesday.

The fact that City are already through to the last 16 means RB Leipzig will be quietly confident of at least finding the back of the net. Bear in mind, too, that City have kept just one clean sheet in their last four outings.

The home team should have too much quality but Leipzig can breach their backline on Tuesday.

As we mentioned above, RB Leipzig are also safely through to the knockout phase of the Champions League. They will therefore see this match akin to a free hit.

That is not to say they have nothing to lose. A demolition job similar to the 7-0 thumping they suffered at the Etihad last season would dent confidence in the Leipzig camp as they attempt to climb into the top four of the Bundesliga before the winter break.

Leipzig’s form has been patchy of late. They have lost three of their last five games in all competitions, although they did see off Red Star Belgrade in their last European assignment.

There is something of the boom or bust about them: Marco Rose’s men have drawn just two of the 20 matches they have contested this term.

Their Champions League games have been especially eventful, producing 3.75 goals per fixture on average. Only one of their four matches has featured under 3.5.

It is no secret that Manchester City are an attack-minded team, so goals should be on the cards here.

Erling Haaland is, as ever, the obvious pick in this market. He usually starts whenever he is fit, but Guardiola may be tempted to rest him on Tuesday.

City are already through to the knockout phase and the Norwegian picked up a knock on international duty last week, so he might not be 100 percent right now.

In terms of value for money, Lois Openda could be the best bet to make the net bulge at the Etihad.

Only Harry Kane and Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy have scored more goals in the Bundesliga than Openda, who has already notched nine in his first season at the Red Bull Arena.

He has also scored twice in the Champions League and may well do so again this midweek.
