Nothing to split top two

The Premier League is back with a bang on Saturday after the international break as champions Manchester City host second-placed Liverpool in a lunchtime blockbuster at the Etihad.

The Light Blues resume the campaign top of the table in their pursuit of another domestic championship but Jurgen Klopp’s Reds take the short trip to Manchester only a point adrift of their hosts.

Both sides have some injury issues to deal with and will need to get up to speed quickly after the international pause – but Saturday’s showdown still promises to live up to its billing.

City have won the previous two meetings between the sides – both at the Etihad – but Klopp has masterminded plenty of impressive victories over Pep Guardiola’s men since taking charge of Liverpool eight years ago.

It is not in either manager’s DNA to play for anything other than victory. Therefore, expectations are high that we will get another thrilling instalment of this modern Premier League rivalry.

But there may be little to choose between the rivals come the final whistle and both bosses would probably be content with a point as they prepare for a hectic festive fixture list.

City were held by Chelsea in an absorbing 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge in their final match before this month’s round of internationals while Liverpool bounced back from an unexpected 1-1 draw at Luton and narrow Europa League defeat at Toulouse with a routine 3-0 home win over Brentford.

Both sides will fancy their chances of claiming three points at the Etihad but the best approach for bettors could be to back two of European football’s finest sides to cancel each other out.

Manchester City vs Liverpool tip 1: Draw @ 16/5 with Sky Bet

Goals expected again

There has not been a goalless draw between these two fierce rivals since October 2018 and seven of the past eight meetings have produced four or more goals.

With both sides’ focus usually firmly on attacking football, we should expect plenty of thrills and spills again.

Unsurprisingly the Light Blues are the Premier League’s leading scorers this season with 32 goals – but the Reds are not far behind, netting 27 times in their first 12 games.

Erling Haaland, provided he passes a fitness test, Julian Alvarez, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden are just four of City’s array of attacking threats while the visitors also possess plenty of firepower in the shape of the ever-reliable Mohamed Salah and the unpredictable but dangerous Darwin Nunez, with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz in supporting roles.

Therefore a punt on over 3.5 goals could be the way to go as both defences may struggle to cope with the weight of offensive prowess on display.

Manchester City vs Liverpool tip 2: Over 3.5 goals @ 6/5 with Sky Bet

Salah and Haaland the obvious star men

For a bet builder covering this big Premier League showdown, backing Salah to score, Haaland to register at least two shots on target and City to take four or more corners is a tasty proposition at 5/1 with Sky Bet.

Salah has been in fine form and remains Liverpool’s biggest goal threat. The Egyptian has scored 10 league goals this season, including seven in his previous five games, and has found the net in his past four fixtures against City. The Reds’ talisman also bagged four goals for Egypt against Djibouti in a 6-0 World Cup qualifier victory last week.

Haaland could prove to be just deadly at the other end. Last season’s Golden Boot recipient has had some slight injury issues of late but he is expected to be fit for Liverpool’s visit.

The Norwegian superstar has scored 17 goals in 18 games in all competitions for City this term and has had at least two shots on target in six of his past eight appearances for the Premier League champions.

Adding in at least four corners for Guardiola’s side bumps the price up to 5/1. The Light Blues are almost guaranteed to play on the front foot and likely to have more possession – and will therefore expect to win their fair share of corners.

In their previous four games they have taken three, six, 12 and 12 corners, so you would expect them to force at least four against the Reds on Saturday.

Manchester City vs Liverpool tip 3: Bet builder – Mohamed Salah to score, Erling Haaland to have 2+ shots on target and Manchester City to take 4+ corners @ 5/1 with Sky Bet
