Guardiola’s men to make it through

Manchester City have rediscovered their collective ability to grind past opponents and they will expect to have too much for RB Leipzig on Tuesday.

The pair played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, with Josko Gvardiol’s header cancelling Riyad Mahrez’s opener, but things could be more open the second time around.

City are unbeaten in winning 21 of their previous 23 European matches at the Etihad, including all three outings on their way to topping Group G.

However, Leipzig have scored in nine of their past 10 away games in all competitions and will push the Cityzens hard.

Pep Guardiola’s side have made it to the last eight of the Champions League in the previous five seasons and have a real shot of making it six in a row.

They persevered for a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday, with Erling Haaland scoring the decider from the penalty spot. However, Arsenal’s 3-0 victory at Fulham on Sunday means City remain five points behind at the top of the Premier League table.

It was a different story for Leipzig, who breezed past Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0 at home and ended the weekend third in the Bundesliga.

After a tough start to this season under Domenico Tedesco, Marco Rose has rescued Die Bullen’s campaign, with his side beating Real Madrid 3-2 at home in Group F.

They also score plenty of goals on the road, with their 21 away strikes second only to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, and they will undoubtedly carry a threat.

However, City’s record in this competition at the Etihad is magnificent and they can be expected to make it through.

A chance of more Mahrez magic

A player that Die Bullen will need to find a formula for dealing with is Mahrez, whose first-leg strike means he has scored on all three occasions the teams have met.

Despite his record, the Algerian remains underrated by some people, but he has become a go-to guy for Guardiola and it would be strange not to see him in the starting line-up on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old is likely to come up against Marcel Halstenberg, who recently picked up a yellow card against Borussia Dortmund’s in-form Julian Brandt.

Mahrez will test the Leipzig left back and could play a decisive role.

Haaland always on hand when needed

Another City player to look for is Haaland, who again proved his importance with that penalty against Palace. The big Norwegian has a good record against Die Bullen.

Haaland scored twice in a game on three occasions against Leipzig during his days at Borussia Dortmund and is sure to get chances on Tuesday.

Long ago, Premier League defences decided that the best way to frustrate City is to sit deep – and Haaland’s form has been collateral damage.

However, Bundesliga football is often more open, with Leipzig’s strategy always to go for the win. That could open things up for the 22-year-old.

Haaland has scored two or more goals in a match on nine occasions this season and his record against Leipzig hints that he could further improve that record.
