Manchester United vs Leicester City predictions

It was not a Premier League game, but Manchester United’s performance against Barcelona on Thursday underlined why they are capable of challenging for the title.

Barcelona finished third in their Champions League group before Christmas, dropping into the secondary continental competition.

But Xavi Hernandez’s side look like one of the strongest sides in Europe right now, as evidenced by their fantastic form in La Liga.

Barcelona have only conceded one goal in their 10 league matches at the Camp Nou this term. Yet United went there on Thursday and found the back of the net twice.

A 2-2 draw in Catalonia hands them the advantage in their two-legged knockout round play-off, but Erik ten Hag’s side perhaps deserved even more on the balance of chances created.

They will now turn their attention back to the Premier League, where just five points separate United from Manchester City in top spot.

Arsenal, who are also five points in advance of United, have played a game fewer than both Manchester clubs.

But given the Gunners’ faltering form and their own excellent recent record, United are very much part of the title conversation.

A victory over Leicester on Sunday would further cement their status as contenders for the crown.

Manchester United vs Leicester City betting tips

Leicester have found form again in the last couple of weeks, but Manchester United should prove too strong in this one.

Manchester United to win and both teams to score – 19/10 (Spreadex)

Leicester are this season’s Jekyll and Hyde side in the Premier League.

They began the campaign with a seven-match winless streak that left Brendan Rodgers’ team bottom of the table, and the manager in danger of the sack.

Leicester’s form picked up just before the World Cup, winning four out of their final five games pre-Qatar. They then lost four consecutive contests after the resumption, before taking seven points from the last nine available.

That upturn in form has come at a vital time for Rodgers, who must have been starting to fear for his job again.

Leicester have played some excellent football in their last two outings, a 4-2 victory over Aston Villa and a 4-1 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur last time out.

January signing Tete has made an instant impact on the right-hand side of the attack. James Maddison is fit again after a spell on the sidelines. Kelechi Iheanacho is back to his best up front.

Having found the net 10 times in their last three games – more than any other team in that period – Leicester will pose a threat going forward on Sunday.

United have kept just one clean sheet in their last five home games. So while they should pick up all three points, Ten Hag’s team will not have everything their own way in this one.

Over 3.5 goals – 6/4 (Spreadex)

Leicester may yet make a late run for the top half, but as things stand this has been a disappointing campaign for a team that finished fifth in Rodgers’ first two full seasons at the helm.

Their primary problem has been their defensive leakiness. Even during their current unbeaten run, the Foxes have shipped an average of 1.66 goals per game.

Their backline has been breached 38 times in total – only Bournemouth and Southampton have worse defensive records.

Scoring goals has been less of an issue. Leicester have been outdone in that regard by only five teams, including their upcoming opponents.

Indeed, United have been in sparkling form going forward of late. They could easily have scored more than twice at the Camp Nou on Thursday.

In each of their last eight encounters in all competitions, Ten Hag’s charges have scored at least two goals.

Marcus Rashford is in the form of his life. The England international looks unstoppable right now, and United are doing an excellent job of supplying their star man.

With all that in mind, this looks set to be an entertaining affair.

Over 1.5 goals first half – 11/8 (Spreadex)

Leicester must wish football games lasted for just 45 minutes. If only first halves were taken into account, Rodgers’ side would currently be fifth, behind only the current top four.

Leicester have scored 23 goals in the opening period of games this term. Only Manchester City, with 27, are more productive before the interval.

The Foxes might be in the bottom half, but they will not arrive at Old Trafford with an inferiority complex. They are likely to have plenty of the ball and will commit bodies to attack from the first whistle.

Their approach should encourage an open game. With Rashford on one flank and (in all likelihood) Jadon Sancho on the other, United possess an abundance of speed in transition.

If Leicester look to come onto them, the Red Devils have the ability to exploit any gaps on their defensive rearguard on the break.

United have scored in the first half in four of their last six home games, while Leicester have notched seven first-half goals in their last three matches.

Sunday’s clash promises to be entertaining from the get-go.
