Visitors could outfox United

On the back of their 2-2 Europa League draw at Barcelona, Manchester United return to Premier League action on Sunday with the visit of a resurgent Leicester City.

The Red Devils’ stock has risen under Erik ten Hag since their dismal start to the season in losses to Brighton and Brentford.

Thursday’s stellar performance against Barcelona brings them into the weekend on a high as they look to challenge a faltering Arsenal, with the Gunners and new leaders Manchester City five points ahead of United.

Leicester also endured a woeful start to the campaign, but the Foxes’ form is much better and they have gradually dug themselves out of the drop zone.

There is no denying Manchester United’s improvement as the season has worn on, but their crowded calendar is sure to have an effect at some point. Still fighting on four fronts, the Red Devils have not only their second Europa League play-off clash with Barcelona to deal with in the coming midweek, but also the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle and their FA Cup fifth-round tie with West Ham.

While qualification for the Champions League will be considered a must, Ten Hag will not want to risk dropping into the Europa Conference League with defeat against the Blaugrana. So United’s Premier League clash with Leicester may mean they pay the price as they prioritise next Thursday’s game.

As for Leicester, survival in the top flight heads their agenda. They travel to Old Trafford with added rest, having had a week off, and solid form behind them. The Foxes demolished Tottenham 4-1 last time out, so garnering seven points from three matches.

Recent history favours them too as Leicester have lost just one of their previous six meetings with United.

Maddison maddening for defences

Any fears that James Maddison would fail to bounce back from his pre-World Cup knee injury seem to have been allayed.

His return to the Leicester team at the end of last month coincided with the start of their unbeaten run, currently at four games across all competitions, and the midfielder has chipped in with goals in his past two matches.

He featured for more than an hour against Tottenham, Aston Villa and – in the FA Cup – Walsall, suggesting concerns over his fitness are no longer an issue for boss Brendan Rodgers and Maddison is likely to be a key outlet against United this weekend.

Goals the order of the day

Leicester’s previous two Premier League games have both brought them four goals, with the 4-2 victory at Villa Park to begin February highlighting their abilities on the road as well as at home.

Manchester United have also been among the goals lately. They have scored two in all of their five previous fixtures across the league, Europe and the Carabao Cup, and before that got three apiece respectively against Reading, in the FA Cup, and Nottingham Forest, in the Carabao.

And while their focus on the forthcoming Barcelona assignment may mean we see a more reserved side to the hosts this weekend, both teams have exhibited enough attacking flair lately to suggest more goals are in the offing.

When it comes to corners, neither United nor Leicester muster up many. United’s 98 up to this point is the league’s 14th-best return, while the Foxes’ 82 is lower than all but Forest’s 70.
