Manchester United vs Sevilla predictions

This could yet be the most successful Manchester United season in the post-Alex Ferguson era.

The Red Devils already have one trophy in the bag in the form of the EFL Cup. They will face Brighton & Hove Albion in the semi-finals of the FA Cup later this month and are on course for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

United are also the favourites to win the Europa League. They eliminated Barcelona in the knockout round play-offs, an impressive feat given how well Xavi Hernandez’s men have performed in La Liga this term.

Erik ten Hag’s team then ran out 5-1 aggregate winners against Real Betis in the last round to set up this quarter-final against their last-16 opponents’ arch-rivals, Sevilla.

The Spanish side are – by some distance – the most successful team in the history of the Europa League. They have lifted the trophy six times, which is double the amount of the next-best Inter, Juventus, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid.

This is a tournament that brings the best out of Sevilla, which is why they cannot be written off. Yet if United play to the level they are capable of, a semi-final place is theirs for the taking.

Ten Hag’s side have been particularly strong at home this season, and they will fancy their chances of coming out on top at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Manchester United vs Sevilla betting tips

Manchester United will be keen to take a healthy lead to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan next week, and we reckon they will do just that.

Manchester United to win to nil – 6/5 (bet365)

Manchester United consolidated their position in the Premier League’s top four with a 2-0 victory over Everton in early kick-off on Saturday.

It was another successful afternoon at Old Trafford for United, whose home record in the top flight is inferior only to the top two of Arsenal and Manchester City in 2022/23.

United have even outdone those two sides in one regard. Visiting Premier League teams have scored a combined eight goals at Old Trafford, which gives the Red Devils the best home defensive record in the division.

United have not shipped a single Premier League goal in front of their own fans in over two months, registering four shut-outs in succession.

In only one of United’s 19 post-World Cup home matches in all competitions have they conceded more than once.

Sevilla are not exactly the best travellers either. They have not won any of their five away games in Europe this campaign, and have failed to find the net in three of them.

Sevilla’s form has improved since Jose Luis Mendilibar replaced Jorge Sampaoli in the dugout a few weeks back, but this will likely be a bridge too far for the Palanganas.

Manchester United/Manchester United half-time/full-time – 21/20 (bet365)

The last 18 months or so have been quite the rollercoaster for Sevilla.

At the start of that period they looked like potential La Liga title challengers under Julen Lopetegui. Sevilla were still second in the standings at the beginning of April 2022.

A poor end to the season ultimately saw them finish fourth, and the slide continued into the current campaign.

In mid-January Sevilla slumped to second-bottom, and a 6-1 thrashing by Atletico Madrid in early March left them outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone.

Mendilibar has steadied the ship somewhat and Sevilla are up to 13th after taking seven points from the last 12 available.

But they are still not safe yet and the relegation battle will be playing on their minds even as they continue their Europa League campaign.

Sevilla will look to keep things tight early on at Old Trafford, but that is easier said than done.

In the Premier League only Brentford have a better first-half record at their home ground than United, who have led nine times at the interval.

Ten Hag’s side made a quick start to their 4-1 first-leg victory over Real Betis and we could see something similar in their latest clash with a Spanish side in the Europa League.

Anthony Martial to score any time – 13/10 (bet365)

The bad news for Manchester United is that Marcus Rashford looks set to miss Thursday’s contest after picking up a groin injury in the defeat of Everton.

At the time of writing the severity of the problem has not been made public, but it is hard to see the England international making a full recovery within a few days.

That is a huge blow to United, who have been heavily reliant on Rashford in the final third this season. Since the turn of the year, the academy product has contributed no less than 45 percent of his team’s goals in the Premier League.

The silver lining is that Rashford’s entrance to the treatment room has come soon after Anthony Martial’s exit from it.

The Frenchman could be in line for his first start since mid-January, either through the middle or from the left.

Martial scored the victory-sealing second goal against Everton and will be determined to make his mark against a club with whom he had an unsuccessful loan spell last season.
