Mexico Open odds analysis

Rahm's odds for the Mexico Open are laughable but not at all surprising. Not only is the Spaniard seeking his fifth win of the calendar year, but he's also the defending winner of this event and is the best of two players in this field ranked inside the top 20 of the OWGR (Tony Finau - No. 16). It all adds up to prohibit an advisable wager on the favorite in the field of 144.

DraftKings is offering the most conservative pricing of our best sports betting sites in the outright market this week, with FanDuel boasting the best odds for bettors on the names near the top of the oddsboard.

Mexico Open key stats

  • Strokes gained: off-the-tee
  • Proximity from 175-200 yards
  • Birdies-or-better percentage
  • Par-5 scoring
  • Sand-save percentage

Vidanta Vallarta is a long par-71 venue at 7,456 yards. While that didn't do too much to prevent scoring in last year's Mexico Open, with 23 players finishing 10-under par or better, it does force us to focus on strokes gained: off-the-tee a little more than we usually might.

The four par 5s were half of the eight holes which played below par last year. The others include one par 3, one 297-yard par 4 (which yielded 16 eagles), and two other par 4s of 445 and 459 yards in length. We'll need to look at par-5 scoring, proximity on long approach shots (175-200 yards), and overall scoring.

Vidanta Vallarta course profile

Par: 71
Length: 7,456 yards
Greens: Paspalum
Architect: Greg Norman

Despite the length, Vidanta Vallarta's only real defense to low scores is the threat of wind off of the Ameca River. The fairways are wide, especially in the landing areas, but positioning is still key off the tee to set up the next shot. Those shots will be played into larger-than-normal putting surfaces which are predominantly guarded by massive sand bunkers.

Tony Finau and Brandon Wu set the 18-hole record of 63 last year while finishing tied for second with Kurt Kitayama. Finau had six birdies and an eagle in his final round to soar up the leaderboard. Rahm had just five bogeys for the tournament.
