Montana Griz host Furman in FCS playoffs second round

MISSOULA — The No. 2 Montana Grizzlies (11-1) will host the No. 7 Furman Paladins (10-2) at 7 p.m. Friday in Washington-Grizzly Stadium. It is the only one of the four FCS quarterfinal games that is taking place on Friday and is the first time a quarterfinal has been held in Missoula since 2011.

This is the Grizzlies’ third quarterfinal appearance in the past four seasons since head coach Bobby Hauck returned to the Garden City. A win would send them to the semifinals for the first time since 2011.

The Griz are the champions of the Big Sky Conference, while the Paladins won the Southern Conference. One of Furman’s losses came against an SEC opponent, South Carolina, and the other came when it was missing its all-conference quarterback and running back.

Pregame

Montana senior left tackle Chris Walker and sophomore left guard Liam Brown both going through warmups. Walker went down in fourth quarter last week. Brown got injured Nov. 11 at Portland State. Walker takes first-team reps at LT in pregame, sophomore Declan McCabe at LG.

First quarter

Montana's Junior Bergen takes the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, juking out the kicker, who falls down around the Furman 40-yard line. First career kickoff return touchdown for the Billings native.

Furman responds with a 1-yard TD run up the middle by RB Dominic Roberto. That comes one play after Tyler Huff hits freshman Colton Hinton for a 70-yard catch-and-run on third-and-6 from Furman's 29-yard line.

Montana seventh-year senior kicker Nico Ramos drills a 39-yard field goal. He's now 8-for-8 this season after taking over kicking duties the last week of October.

Third quarter

Montana's defense starts the second half by forcing a three-and-out. Furman had 156 yards on 30 plays in the first half. Take out the 70-yard pass and the 53-yard run, and the Paladins totaled 33 yards on their other 28 plays.

Montana QB Clifton McDowell is up to 85 rush yards after the Grizzlies' first drive of the third quarter. That's a single-game career high for him. His previous best was 83 yards against Sacramento State on Nov. 4.

Furman false starts on third-and-1 from its own 15-yard line. That's the 19th false start by an opposing team at Washington-Grizzly Stadium this year. Tyler Huff escapes pressure on third-and-6, throws incompletion. Another short punt sets up Griz at Furman 42-yard line.

Montana wastes good field position early in the third quarter after taking over at the Furman 42-yard line following a punt. QB Clifton McDowell is sacked for the second time today and the Griz lose 5 yards before punting.

Furman QB Tyler Huff misses wide receiver Joshua Harris deep down the left sideline. He's now 6-of-21 passing (28.6%) for 109 yards.

Fourth quarter

Montana goes three-and-out. The Griz have 64 yards in the second half. The Paladins have 42 yards but got a short field on the interception.

Montana WR Aaron Fontes drops a wide-open pass at the first-down marker on third-and-3 from the Grizzlies' 46-yard line. Travis Benham pins Furman at the 3-yard line with a 51-yard punt. Griz trail 21-20 with 11:22 left in the game.

Montana leads Furman 28-21 with 0:36 left in the game. The Paladins have a first down at the Grizzlies' 13-yard line after a 15-yard pass interference penalty called on Ryder Meyer.
