Newcastle Knights vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Match Predictions

Who will win this battle between seventh and eighth on the NRL ladder? Here are our top predictions ahead of the Knights vs Rabbitohs this Sunday:

Newcastle Knights to Win

The Knights come into this match in scintillating form, riding a six-match winning streak that has well and truly turned their season around in the latter half of 2023. With a top eight berth well within reach now, it’s unlikely a Newcastle side playing at home will drop the ball here and come off the boil, knowing that another win or two will see them into the post-season.

Don’t expect this one to be easy, however. While the Rabbitohs have been patchy in 2023, they are still sitting in eighth, and will be motivated by the passing of their Premiership-winning No 15 Kyle Turner, who suddenly passed on Friday night. Expect a spirited performance from the Bunnies, with the Knights just nabbing this one at the death.

Dom Young to Score

Knights winger Dom Young has been a sensation this season, scoring 20 tries in 20 appearances, and spearheading his side’s revival in recent months. While the big man has had a quiet past two outings, not scoring since the Raiders match in July, the reality is that Young is yet to go three games in a row without scoring in 2023.

It feels as though the 22-year-old is overdue for a meat pie here, and should touch down at some stage given the Rabbitohs’ vulnerability on the flanks.

Newcastle Knights vs South Sydney Rabbitohs preview

Heading into this match, here’s a look at how both teams’ seasons have gone so far in the NRL 2023:

Newcastle Knights

Few were giving the Newcastle Knights much hope in 2023 after their 14th placed finish last season. However, the Knights have been one of the big surprise packages this year, sitting in seventh currently with 11 wins and nine losses. Another win here would get them one foot into the playoffs, meaning we’ll likely see a focused Newcastle outfit on Sunday afternoon.

South Sydney Rabbitohs

It’s been a stop-start season for the Rabbitohs so far in 2023, with the Bunnies winning six in a row across April and May, then failing to win consecutive matches since then. This puts South Sydney in eighth place on the ladder, with a playoffs spot far from secure as four other teams could realistically pip them from the post-season cut. They’ll be looking for a big performance here after dealing to the Dragons 26-14 last week.

Newcastle Knights vs South Sydney Rabbitohs head to head

This is one of the tighter head to heads in the NRL, with South Sydney leading the sides’ head to head 17-15 across their 32 games. The most recent encounter was in July 2022, where the Rabbitohs won 40-28 in Newcastle.
