Newcastle vs Arsenal tips, Premier League predictions & odds

Enfield Independent

They’ll look to bounce back at St James’ Park, where they secured an impressive 2-0 victory last season and have a decent record, winning on eight of their last 10 visits.

Arsenal were one of just two sides to beat Newcastle at home in the league last season and Eddie Howe’s team are once again a force to be reckoned with on their turf, getting the better of both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain in front of the Toon Army recently.

Despite those scalps, football betting sites make the Magpies marginal home underdogs, but Arsenal’s recent patchy form is pushing us towards backing the Magpies as part of our trio of selections for the teatime tussle.

Newcastle may edge Saturday showdown

Howe has described the visit of Arsenal as a big test of his team’s top-four credentials and the Gunners’ current second-place standing in the league would suggest he’s on the money.

Having pushed Manchester City all the way in the title race last season, Mikel Arteta’s team are mounting another championship challenge and could go top of the table with a win.

The north London outfit are second favourites for the title in the Premier League odds after winning seven of their first ten games and hammered Sheffield United 5-0 in their last league engagement.

The big guns will come straight back into the Arsenal line-up in the north-east, although Gabriel Jesus, Thomas Partey and Emile Smith Rowe are unavailable through injury.

The Gunners had the league’s best away record last season and have won three of their first four road matches this term. However, in all competitions, Arsenal have lost two of their last four away games, while they were lucky to escape from Chelsea with a draw recently.

They looked suspect defensively at Stamford Bridge and now face the best attack in the league with Newcastle having netted 26 goals across their ten games.

The Magpies' high press and energetic style is a handful for any side and they will make life uncomfortable for the visitors right from the off.

Howe is having to deal with a sizeable number of injuries right now with Matt Targett the latest player to go down, joining Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak on the sidelines.

With Fabian Schar also a doubt through illness, Howe doesn’t have too many options. But, Newcastle showed in the win over Manchester United they still have plenty of quality.

Without Botman and Schar, a defence that’s kept three clean sheets in five league games at home would be vulnerable to an Arsenal attack that’s scored in all but one of their last 17 away matches in the top flight.

Returning south from a raucous St James’ Park with anything would be a great result for Arsenal and the quality the visitors possess is factored into the thinking behind backing Newcastle in the draw no bet market.

Newcastle's injuries and busy schedule are a concern, but the Magpies have shown they have the quality to win these big games. We're backing Newcastle draw no bet with our first selection at even-money with BetMGM.

Hot shot Wilson to hit his mark

Newcastle were able to give Callum Wilson a rest in midweek, meaning he should be fresh to try and continue his recent excellent run in front of goal.

The Magpies’ top scorer in each of the last three seasons has notched six goals in his last six Premier League appearances and is unsurprisingly the favourite with bookmakers to score at any time in this game.

Wilson is averaging a goal every 60 minutes in the league this season and should enjoy facing an Arsenal defence that’s looked a little vulnerable in recent weeks.

Summer signing David Raya hasn’t inspired confidence in goal for the Gunners, who have conceded two or more in three of their last four away games in all competitions.

Wilson, who recently moved up to third in Newcastle’s all-time Premier League goalscorer list, spearheads one of the best attacks in the division and is 15/8 with bet365 to score again on Saturday.

Feisty night on Tyneside

With Newcastle having muscled their way into the top-four fight since the Saudi takeover two years ago, this fixture now has a little extra spice to it.

Both meetings last season were feisty encounters. Last January's goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium produced eight yellow cards and featured an angry exchange on the touchline between Howe and Arteta.

The return fixture was a little calmer with only three yellow cards shown, but there were still 28 fouls in the game.

Newcastle are giving away just under 12 fouls per game this season, the fourth-highest average in the league, while Arsenal have hit double figures for fouls conceded in each of the last four away games.

Stuart Atwell will take charge of this game and while he ranks as one of the more lenient referees in the league, his whistle is likely to get a good work out with over 24.5 fouls our final selection.
