Newmarket tips: Best bets and odds for Wednesday's race card, including the classic Nell Gwyn Stakes

Last year’s Nell Gwyn Stakes winner, Cachet, went on to land the 1000 Guineas back at Newmarket three weeks later at 16-1, so best not to underestimate whatever wins the classic trial on Wednesday.

Cachet’s emboldened young trainer George Boughey now runs two, Believing and Queen Olly, but neither have obvious claims in what looks a hot renewal.

Coppice, one of five unbeaten fillies in a field of 15, is a much more likely winner.

Like many of John Gosden’s top-notchers in recent years, this full-sister to the classy Calyx had her first taste of action on the All-Weather and though her cosy Kempton win last autumn was nothing to write home about in itself, she made a big impression on her rider Rab Havlin.

Now Frankie Dettori, already boasting the most Nell Gwyn wins (seven), takes over on the daughter of Kingman and, with another six months on her back, we can look forward to her displaying the form required to give her a real shot at the first fillies’ classic of the season on 7 May.

Gosden’s Golden Horn took in the listed Fielden Stakes in 2015 before going on to win the Derby and just about every other important international race in the calendar that year, but it’s not normally a staging post to stardom these days.

The stable is represented this time by Intinso, partnered by Hollie Doyle, who has a retainer with owner Imad Alsagar.

Intinso has a much tougher task on paper than when scoring on his debut at Newcastle last October, but holds 2000 Guineas, Dante and Derby entries, so its safe to assume much better is expected.

Charlie Appleby invariably has his squad ready to rock at Newmarket’s opening fixture of the season and sure enough, he was out the blocks with two winning favourites.

Ottoman Fleet was the star of the show when swooping late under William Buick to land the Earl of Sefton Stakes, the four-year-old’s first success at Group level.

“He seems to bring his A-game to this course, so this was his main target after three solid runs in Dubai,” said the trainer. “He was fit and well and we were confident.”

Newmarket tips for Wednesday

  • 1.50 Dionysian (Each-Way) 11-1: Won his last two starts in fine style and fancied to complete his hat-trick, despite top weight.
  • 3.55 Coppice (Next Best) 2-1: Can take care of business here before a crack at the 1000 Guineas.

Majestic Pride initiated the Appleby-Buick double in the opener, but made quite hard work of it and is unlikely to take up his entry in Newmarket’s 2000 Guineas next month.

Dettori, meanwhile, was tired but happy after kicking off his final campaign on home soil with an easy victory aboard Covey in the maiden.

He explained: “I arrived back from America this morning and had just two hours sleep on the plane and two in my bed, but I had to start somewhere and I felt Covey was a good favourite.”
