Heading into the 2023 regular season, neither the New York Jets nor the Denver Broncos thought they would be squaring off with matching 1-3 records. This AFC showdown, which kicks off at 4:25 p.m. ET on Oct. 8 on CBS, could be a chance for either team to get their season back on track.

The Jets’ season got off to a disastrous start, losing superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers to an Achilles tendon injury. While they prevailed over the Bills, the Jets have since lost three on the bounce. New York fell for the third straight week when they bowed to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4, 23-20. They lost the previous two weeks to the Dallas Cowboys, 30-10, and the New England Patriots, 15-10.

If there’s been a bright spot for the Jets, it’s been a decent defense showing. They have five interceptions, seven sacks, conceding just six touchdowns. The offense’s oft-fleeting time on the field hasn’t helped.

The Broncos, who brought in coach Sean Payton with hopes of turning their organizational woes around, finally picked up their first win with a comeback victory over the winless Chicago Bears in Week 4, 31-28 — though they did trail 28-7 before marching to victory.

Quarterback Russell Wilson went 21-for-28 for 223 yards and three touchdowns against the Bears. He has completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 1,014 yards on the season and thrown nine touchdowns to two interceptions.

This is a game of two bad teams who were lucky to pick up their lone victories. Neither team has the offensive firepower to blow this game open, with the Jets averaging just 4.7 yards per play and the Broncos averaging 5.9 per play.

While the Jets have gone over on two of their four games and the Broncos have gone over in three, neither team is equipped to put on an offensive showcase this week.

Expect this to be a low-scoring affair, with both teams struggling offensively.

Last week against the defending Super Bowl champions, quarterback Zach Wilson had some of his best plays despite the losing effort. He threw for 245 yards with two touchdowns on 28 of 39 passing.

He has the luxury of going up against one of the worst defenses in the NFL this week.

The Broncos have given up 13 passing touchdowns and 1,142 yards through the air. Offenses are averaging 8.9 passing yards per play against them, which bodes well for the young Jets signal caller.
