The Bills travel to Foxborough as the NFL’s third-highest-scoring team, averaging 28.8 points per game. The Patriots sit on the other side of the spectrum, scoring just 12 points per game, the NFL’s second-fewest.

While Buffalo is capable of scoring at will, it has struggled with inconsistency, particularly in the previous two weeks. The Bills scored 20 points in a losing effort across the pond against the Jaguars in Week 5 and managed a meager 14 points at home against the Giants in Week 6, one of the NFL’s worst defensive units.

The question is what version of the Bills offense will show up in Foxborough on Sunday against a Patriots team that allows 25.3 points per game, the NFL’s eighth-most.

With so many unknowns, you can rely on one thing come Sunday: The Bills defense will show up, as they’ve done consistently for six weeks thus far. Buffalo, which gave up a season-high 25 points to the Jags in London in Week 5, has allowed just 14.8 points per game, the NFL’s third-fewest.

That is an extraordinarily ominous prospect for New England’s woeful offense, which scored three combined points in Weeks 4 and 5.

The Bills offense can put up bundles of points when it’s on, which it hasn’t been lately. While the Patriots’ defense has been abysmal recently, Belichick’s team will do everything possible to avoid another home embarrassment, this time against a division rival.

Expect a much-improved Patriots’ performance, one reminiscent of their 24-17 Week 2 home loss to the high-flying Dolphins. The Patriots aren’t good enough to beat Buffalo but have the defensive nous and experience to limit the Bills’ offensive output, at least somewhat.

And there’s a high probability, especially against one of the worst offenses and most disappointing, underperforming quarterbacks, that the Bills elite defense will keep the Patriots’ anemic attack at bay.

James Cook has been a model of inconsistency thus far, carrying for over 53.5 yards in three of six encounters. He amassed 71 yards on the ground during last week’s home victory over the Giants. The Bills will want to establish a ground game on hostile terrain, so look for Cook to be involved early.

Also, Buffalo should have the lead in the third and fourth quarter, increasing the probability of Cook surpassing the 53.5-yard barrier. His odds of going over are helped even further by New England’s mediocre rush defense, the NFL’s 15th-ranked.
