The Astros signed Montero for 3.34 million AAV. The key to having a strong roster in baseball is that your back end guys are good and some of your stars are cheap. Monterso is expensive, but the team has a lot of surplus, especially in starting pitching, catcher, and outfield. Only Yainer and Lee have value that might bring back an MLB player higher than a Dubon-level 26th man type. If they sign JV, they go into 2023 with 7 viable starting pitchers. If the Astros bring Jv back, one of the other six needs to be traded for anMLB part.
The Astros have 6 starters, 6 reliable relievers, and 6 good hitters. They could sign Rizzo and Contreras, a former catcher and DH. If they let JV walk, they could trade Luis Garcia for Kirk. They can also sign Nate Lowe or Nate LeMahieu. The Astros are playing in the 2022 World Series. Houston is also playing the 2014 World Championship. It's the season of the Houston Astros.
