Ohio State Football: Who will start at QB in the Cotton Bowl?

The Ohio State football team will have a new starting quarterback next season after Kyle McCord decided to enter the transfer portal. The Buckeyes have been in contact with several quarterbacks in the transfer portal to try to get someone for next season and possibly beyond.

However, there is a more pressing issue the Buckeyes face. Who is going to start the bowl game? The Buckeyes face Missouri in the Cotton Bowl in just a few weeks. With McCord out of the picture, that leaves just two realistic options to be the starter.

Devin Brown was deep in a battle with McCord during the offseason and the first couple of games of the season for the starting job. He ultimately didn’t come out on top and didn’t look that great the times that he did get snaps against IU and Youngstown State.

Brown is still young though. He also came in and gave the Buckeyes a run threat at quarterback a few times during the Purdue game and actually scored a couple of rushing touchdowns. If Day wants to get him experience against a real team to see if he could handle the job next year, the Cotton Bowl would be a good time to do it.

Lincoln Kienholz is the other option. Kienholz only saw the field this year during blowouts when Brown was injured against Minnesota and Michigan State. He only threw a total of five passes this season and completed four of them for 25 yards.

Kienholz is just a freshman though. To be honest, I didn’t really like what I saw from Brown earlier in the season. I wouldn’t mind giving Kienholz a shot in the bowl game. Who knows? Maybe he looks fantastic and shows that he’s ready to grab the starting job for next season.

Whoever Ryan Day decides to go with will have an audition for the starting job heading into next year against whatever transfer quarterback the Ohio State football team brings in. It could be a big opportunity for either guy.
