Ohio State Football: Big transfer QB target off the board

As we know, the Ohio State football team is interested in adding a quarterback from the transfer portal for next season. They had been connected to a few of them. It now looks like they are going to have to recalibrate their efforts because one of their biggest targets is now off the board.

Riley Leonard, the transfer from Duke, has made his commitment. He has decided to head to Notre Dame. This isn’t a shocker since he has been linked to Notre Dame since his name was entered into the transfer portal a week or so ago.

Still, this stings for the Buckeyes. They were holding out hope that they could land him after he left Notre Dame on a visit without committing straight away. Leonard had become the Buckeyes’ top priority. Now, they might have to circle back and see who is left.

Cam Ward left the Ohio State football program off his list of teams he was visiting, so he might not be an option anymore. We are getting closer to a world in which the Buckeyes don’t get a transfer quarterback at all. They might be rolling with what they have.

What they have is Devin Brown, who lost the starting job to Kyle McCord this year, Lincoln Kienholz, a guy who has thrown four career passes, and true freshman Air Noland. That room, while decorated with a lot of recruiting stars, doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence.

If those are the options next season, I’d love to see Noland get a shot at the starting job. I like his high school tape and I like the traits that he brings to the field. My fear is that Brown gets the job after he likely starts the Cotton Bowl. I’m not sure I’m into that after seeing his play earlier this year.

We’ll see how it all shakes out. It’s a shame the Buckeyes won’t have Leonard though.
