Padres pregame: Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado out of the lineup entirely

With postseason odds down to 0.3 percent after Saturday’s loss, according to ESPN, the Padres will sit two of the Big Four entirely:

Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado.

Jurickson Profar will play right field and Eguy Rosario will play third base in their place on Sunday (11:10 a.m. first pitch).

Tatis has been in the starting lineup every game since sitting July 16 in Philadelphia with an ankle sprain and has started 122 of the teams’ 123 games since returning from his suspension on April 20.

It’s been a struggle at times, too, as Tatis peaked in June with a .911 OPS only to see those numbers slip to .732 in July, .674 in August and .677 in the first eight games of September.

Meanwhile, Machado has been nursing tennis elbow and had served as the DH in every game this month.

Sunday is Machado’s first full day off since returning from a broken bone in his hand on June 2.

Machado had a .713 OPS in June and a 1.092 OPS in July before seeing that number drop to .695 over his last 36 games.

Profar went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBIs while playing first base on Saturday, his first game in the majors since Aug. 25.

Profar will be in right field for the first time since playing 29 games there for the Padres in 2021.

Rosario is playing his first game in the majors since going 1-for-5 as a call-up last year.

He was expected to compete for a bench job this spring but fractured his ankle in winter ball. He was hitting .265/.348/.422 with five homers and 28 RBIs in 43 games at Triple-A El Paso.

Here is how the Astros will line up for the series finale:

Sunday’s pitching matchup

Padres RHP Matt Waldron (0-2, 5.12 ERA)

The knuckle-balling rookie is making his third start. He’s throwing the knuckleball 20.5 percent of the time and yielding a .154 average and .231 slugging percentage against the pitch. His four-seamer, however, is getting pounded to the tune of a .333 batting average and an .833 slugging percentage.

Astros RHP J.P. France (10-5, 3.72 ERA)

The 28-year-old rookie had a 3.73 ERA over 362 1/3 innings over five seasons in the minors before making his debut in May. Reverse splits have righties feasting (.929 OPS) and lefties struggling (.630) against France, who throws a 93 mph four-seamer, cutter, change-up, curve and sweeper.
