Padres pregame: Manny Machado sits in Petco finale as Friars cling to long odds

Manny Machado had not played more than two games in a row in more than two weeks when served as the DH on Saturday. But the Padres’ win streak was halted at eight with an extra-inning loss, their postseasons odds were diced back down to 1 percent and he’s out of the lineup on Sunday for the final game of the year at Petco Park.

First pitch is at 1:10 p.m.

“I feel like two on — he’s got two games in him and then needs a day off,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said earlier in the week as he explained how the team is managing Machado’s workload while playing through tennis elbow.

Machado was 4-for-4 on Friday with two home runs that served as the pivotal blasts in the team’s eighth straight win and got him to a nice round number.

For all his struggles this year, Machado has 30 home runs to go with 88 RBIs and a .253/.317/.463 batting line.

Without Machado available, shortstop Xander Bogaerts will serve as the DH and remain atop the order. Second baseman Ha-Seong Kim will bat second, followed by left fielder Juan Soto, right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and catcher Luis Campusano in the five-hole.

Garrett Cooper is at first base, Matthew Batten is at second, Eguy Rosario will play third and José Azocar is in center against the Cardinals’ left-handed starter.

The Padres begin the day five games behind the Cubs in the race for the final wild-card spot with seven games left to the season.

The Cubs (81-74) have won their first two games against the Colorado Rockies this weekend and will play at playoff-bound Atlanta and Milwaukee to close the season.

The Cubs are a half-game behind the Diamondbacks (81-73), but both teams own tiebreakers over the Padres.

The Marlins (80-75), Reds (79-77) and Giants (77-78) are also all still alive. A win on Saturday would have inched the Padres closer to leapfrogging at least the Giants in this push to keep their season alive.

Here is how St. Louis will line up Sunday:

Sunday’s pitching matchup

Cardinals LHP Drew Rom (1-3, 6.92 ERA)

The 23-year-old rookie has a 21-to-15 strikeout-to-walk ratio over the first 26 innings of his career. He’s allowed five home runs and is allowing a .303/.384/.541 batting line.

This is his first appearance against the Padres or any of their hitters.

Padres RHP Michael Wacha (12-4, 3.44 ERA)

He has a 6.66 ERA over his last five starts, striking out 26 against 13 walks over 24 1/3 innings. Wacha’s only start against the team that drafted him was last year, when he allowed a run in 5 1/3 innings in a win over the Cardinals.

  • 1B Paul Goldschmidt (3-for-14, 2B, RB, 3 BBs, 7 Ks)
  • INF Tommy Edman (1-for-3, K)
  • C Andrew Knizner (0-for-2)
