San Diego vs Atlanta: Probable Pitchers

After turning in the first no-hitter in Padres franchise history early last season, Musgrove is enjoying an utterly stellar 2022 campaign so far. San Diego is 6-0 in his starts — with all six of them being of the quality vintage.

He went seven innings in his most recent outing on Sunday against the Marlins (tossing a season-high 108 pitches), allowing five hits, two earned runs and a walk while striking out eight in a 3-2 win.

Musgrove, who reportedly turned down an eight-year, $90 million extension recently with his hometown club, has been dealing this season. His 13.67 strikeout-to-walk ratio is third-best in all of baseball and his 0.90 WHIP is seventh-best in MLB.

Like Musgrove, Wright had been a quality start machine prior to his last appearance against the Red Sox on Tuesday. The 26-year-old had gone at least six innings while allowing three earned runs or less in four of his five starts — with the Bravos going 4-1 in those outings. But a six-run second inning by Boston undid those good vibes, as the reigning champs lost 9-4.

After Atlanta was victorious in his first four starts (with Wright earning a win in three of those outings), the team’s first-round pick from 2017 has lost two straight. Wright saw his ERA go from 1.74 to 3.03 in the wake of the Red Sox game, in which he allowed six earned runs on seven hits and four walks over 4.2 innings.

Padres vs Braves Betting Outlook

Atlanta owns a slight 6-4 edge over San Diego in head-to-head matchups between these two clubs in their last 10 meetings. Brian Snitker’s club squeaked past San Diego on Saturday, Marcell Ozuna homered and Austin Riley hit a tiebreaking double to key a four-run eighth inning rally that helped the Bravos bounce back from an 11-6 defeat on Friday in the series opener.

Meanwhile ,the Pads have been keyed by Eric Hosmer (.364/.427/.534) and Manny Machado (.359/.439/.586) so far. The pair have combined for 16 doubles, 11 home runs and 47 RBI in the first month-plus of the 2022 campaign.

The Braves have +1200 odds to win the Fall Classic, while the Padres own +1700 odds in the World Series odds.

Padres vs Braves Prediction

With Ronald Acuna Jr likely missing a fourth straight game with a sore grain and a pair of stud starters going, this one figures to be low scoring.

The teams combined to score 28 runs in the first two, but Musgrove is 3-1 with a 4.50 ERA in seven career starts against Atlanta, while Wright is 0-0 with a 3.60 ERA in one previous appearance against the Padres. The rubber game has the feel of a pitchers duel.
