Podcast has Seminoles, Hurricanes experts discussing Saturday's game

The Florida State vs. Miami football rivalry is all about streaks.

Miami won the first five times the two teams played (1951-57), and eight out of the first nine.

Florida State then rattled off the next seven in a row from 1963-72.

Miami won seven of 10 meetings in the 1980s.

Florida State ruled the 1990s, winning five in a row from 1995-99.

Miami then took six straight from 2000-2004, including an Orange Bowl victory.

From 2005-2016, the Seminoles owned the series, winning 10 out of 12, including seven in a row from 2010-16.

Miami rebounded with four straight, and now FSU has won the past two.

All told, Miami leads the all-time series 35-32.

Last year wasn’t close. The Seminoles won 45-3. The 42-point margin of victory matched Miami’s 52-10 win from 2020 as the second-largest margin of victory in the series.

FSU holds the largest, winning 47-0 in 1997.

Miami comes into this game 6-3 after losing 20-6 at NC State this past weekend while FSU is 9-0 after defeating Pittsburgh 24-7.

The Seminoles come into this game 14-point favorites.

Will Miami get back on the winning track, or does FSU keep its streak rolling?

To help me break down this game, I welcome in Ehsan Kassim, the Seminoles beat writer for the Tallahassee Democrat, and Steve Gorten, a Hurricanes correspondent that provides stories for the Palm Beach Post.

They are the latest guests on “The *State* of Florida Sports Podcast,” powered by the USA Today Network.

Ehsan will talk about Florida State’s potent offense, led by Heisman candidate Jordan Travis, running back Trey Benson, and electric receivers Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson, both of whom have been dealing with injuries.

"They had more participation in practice on Sunday. We didn't see Keon Coleman practice all last week but I didn't think anything of it. It didn't look like he was dealing with anything serious but obviously he didn't play," Ehsan says during the podcast. "I'm betting that they are closer to being back this week but hard to tell.""It's hard to know for sure but we'll know more as the week goes on."

Steve will discuss the recent struggles of Tyler Van Dyke and UM’s offense.

"It's been 2 completely different seasons for Van Dyke," Steve says during the podcast. "If you look at the first four games of the season, he threw 11 touchdowns and had one interception. At that point, he felt like he was playing his best football ever. ... In the four games since, he's thrown 10 interceptions."

Aside from those topics, they'll talk about defense, who they'd scheme for the opponent, they'll ask each other questions they want to know about the team the other covers, and they'll share if they think Miami can cover the spread or if this game will get out of hand.
