Premier League cult hero who became instant derby icon joins second division club in 12th move of career

PREMIER LEAGUE cult hero Fabio Borini has joined Sampdoria in the 12th move of his career.

The Italian side were relegated from the Serie A last season.

Borini has signed a two-year deal at Samp and will be hoping to fire them back into the top division.

He will work under manager and football legend Andrea Pirlo, who was his boss at former club Fatih Karagumruk in Turkey.

Borini is adored by Sunderland fans for scoring a sensational winner in a 2-1 clash with local rivals Newcastle in 2013 just after his arrival.

He played 93 matches for the Black Cats, scoring 17 goals.

The one-time capped Italian international first moved to the Prem in 2009, joining Chelsea as a youngster.

After loan spells at Swansea and Roma, he made a permanent switch to Liverpool and spent two seasons at Anfield before going to Sunderland.

He left after their relegation in 2017 and returned home to Italy to join AC Milan.

The 32-year-old would then spend one campaign with Hellas Verona.

Borini then moved to Turkish outfit Fatih Karagumruk, where he was since 2020.

The winger scored an incredible 19 league goals last season, coming behind only ex-West Brom star Mbaye Diagne, former Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi and West Ham hero Enner Valencia in the scoring charts.

Sampdoria are now owned by Leeds chief Andrea Radrizzani, who is set to sell the Championship club.
