Woodbine hosts the Grade I Queen's Plate this Sunday

The 2021 edition of the Queen's Plate could well be a family affair six of the 13 entries being trained by a member of the Attard family. Neil Monnery has a quick overview of some of the live betting options ahead of handicapping the race later in the week...

Trainer Kevin Attard certainly isn’t shy in putting some of his best three-year-old horses forward to race against each other. With four of his stable entered for the Grade I Queen’s Plate at Woodbine this Sunday, he’s clearly hoping that having the extra numbers will put him in the position to finally win Canada’s oldest horse race.

Bizarrely his biggest challenge may come from inside his own family as Keep Grinding has been installed as the early 4-1 favorite on the Morning Line. This son of the mine Grade I winner Tizway is owned by his 17 year-old son and trained by his father. It would be fair to say that this family are going to be the faces of this event with no fewer than six of the 13 horses entered being trained by a relative.

Munnyfor Ro might be the middle Attard’s best hope coming off a fine win in the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks back at the start of the month. A filly has competed in the Queen’s Plate every year since 2008 and four of them have crossed the line first.

At 9-2, this daughter of multiple Graded Stakes winner Munnings will be a form fan favorite once the pools open. It would not shock me at all that the storyline of the inter-family battle will dominate the coverage and therefore potentially skew the pools somewhat as casual fans may well bet heavier on the two of them compared to the seasoned bettor.

The third choice is the first time we don’t see an Attard as trainer with the Philip Serpe trained Safe Conduct a 5-1 shot. He’s set to step on to the Tapeta surface for the first time so it is hard to get a good feel for how he might go. He came home eighth in the Grade I Belmont Derby last time out but the quality in that race was vastly superior to what is on show in this race. The fact Irad Ortiz is going north of the border to ride this son of Bodemeister shows his connections like his chances.

Graham Motion is sending out Dance Some Mo and if he sticks at the shockingly long 12-1 that is his Morning Line odds then I’d be inclined to use him in the Exotics. Second last time out to Harlan Estate on his Tapeta debut at Woodbine in an Allowance Race, he has shown good speed when breaking his Maiden on the turf down at Churchill Downs. The horse that beat him last time out is also a live longshot to win this race.

I’ll be studying the card closely and will be posting my Woodbine Picks overnight on Saturday. This race is relatively open so I can see some value when it comes to playing this race.
