Ranking Every Muppets Christmas Special and Movie

Jim Henson’s Muppets are a great combination of crazy and optimistic personalities. Before and after Hensen”s death, his creations have been in countless Christmas-related films and shows. Den of Geek has decided to rank these entries from worst to best.

John Denver and The Muppets: A Christmas Together (1979) is one of the worst Muppet Christmas specials. The only time the M Puppets sing is when Piggy and some of them sing "Christmas is Coming" in the dressing room. Denver would collaborate with the Puppies again years later with Rocky Mountain Holiday.

Lady Gaga and The Muppets Holiday Spectacular is an hour and a half of Lady Gaga musical numbers to promote Gaga's album Artpop and the movie Muppet Most Wanted. It also includes appearances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elton John, RuPaul, and Kristen Bell. For the most part, it doesn't mesh right and it feels more tacked on.

The Muppets live in the same New York City apartment building. Gonzo promised to drop off Claire's letter to Santa at the post office, but it ended up back in his pocket. The final minutes with the resolution of how Santa gets the letter and what Claire asks for feel uninspired. Whoopi Goldberg gets to be on the cover of the DVD despite having about 10 seconds of screentime as a jokeless taxi driver.

The Muppets: Single All the Way is a sitcom that lasted for one season. It was a bit cynical at first, but picked up over time. The Christmas episode has a lot of plotlines, including Yolanda Rat scamming Secret Santa and Fozzie being dumped by his girlfriend. Mindy Kaling does a singing number. The episode is mainly about Fozzle and Piggy's relationship. They break up. She later realizes she didn't push back at her breakup with Kermit.

The Christmas Toy is a 1986 Pixar Christmas special. It's about a group of toys who come to life when humans are gone. The main theme is "Together at Christmas". Mew is one of the only likable characters. The movie is very different from Toy Story. A Muppet Family Christmas is based on it. They used to reprise the theme.

Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree is a 1995 Muppets Christmas special hosted by Kermit. It's a delightful story but nothing groundbreaking. Nabisco sponsored the special. The lumberjacks get their own Muppet-y theme song. They are not really important to the story. The version with all the commercials is just ads for cookies and crackers. The Great Santa Claus Switch is a 1970s Muppets Christmas special. It's about Santa being kidnapped by Cosmo Scam. The plot is slightly lazy, but the final shot of Thog and CosMO during the end credits is beautiful. The special is in continuity with the Twilight Zone episode "Night of the Meek". It is ranked 5th on the list of Muppet Christmas specials and movies.

It's a Very Merry Muppets Christmas Movie is a time capsule of the early 2000s. Celebrity appearances include Joan Cusack, Matthew Lillard, William H. Macy, Carson Daly, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, WCW Champion David Arquette, and the cast of Scrubs. It's missing in It’s a Wonderful Life is the alternate universe where Kermit visits Piggy in the reality where he was never born. After seeing how much worse things are without him, Kermits visits struggling artist Gonzo and creates a new connection with him via a heartfelt duet.

Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas is a 1977 Christmas special. It's about a widow and her son struggling to survive in poverty. The story is depressing but it's also a Christmas story. It teaches us the true meaning of Christmas. There are some great sets and props in the special and it has great props.

The Muppets are staying at Fozzie's mom's place for Christmas. She's renting the place out to Doc from Fraggle Rock. The Muppet Family Christmas is the ultimate MUPPOT crossover. The last ten minutes of the special is dedicated to M Puppets singing Christmas carols.

The Muppets Christmas Carol is the best adaptation of the Dickens' story. The soundtrack is great and the pacing is on point. Bean Bunny was the worst part of Muppet*Vision 3D. The M Puppets are mapped to the characters to perfection. They pull no punches with Tiny Tim/Robin's death and with Kermit and Piggy's shattered state. I hate Bean. He was worst in MppetVision.
