Game Preview

Real Madrid fell a goal behind early in their encounter with Espanyol on Sunday but ran out 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Vinicius, Militao, and Asensio. The three points mean Real remains second in La Liga, six points behind Barcelona. Real Madrid will once again be without David Alaba and Fernand Mendy for the game against Liverpool, Eduardo Camavinga had a torrid time at left back on Sunday so it is likely we see Nacho occupy the role he filled so adeptly at Anfield in the first leg.

Liverpool suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday, denting their form and confidence heading into this key matchup. Despite an opening 20-minute spell that saw them fail to capitalize on several chances, Liverpool was second-best for much of the game and the Cherries ran out deserved winners in the end. Liverpool is expected to field a largely unchanged line-up from the game against Bournemouth with Thiago Alcantara, Luis Diaz, and Joe Gomez all set to miss the trip to Madrid through injury.

Prediction

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool can never be counted out of a game too early, but even they will struggle to overturn a three-goal deficit here. Real Madrid has enough about them to ensure they progress to the next round by winning this tie.
