Bournemouth vs Liverpool predictions

Liverpool did not win a trophy last season and, as well as challenging for the Premier League crown, that is something they will want to put right this time around.

In 2022/23, the Reds fell well short as far as the title is concerned. They ended the campaign in fifth, out of the Champions League qualification spots and 22 points adrift of Manchester City in top spot.

But they did not get close to success in any other competition either. Liverpool suffered elimination in the last 16 of the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid.

Brighton & Hove Albion ended their participation in the FA Cup in the fourth round, which is the same stage Liverpool bowed out of the EFL Cup following a defeat by Manchester City.

They have the chance to go one better by beating Bournemouth on Wednesday. Liverpool will be confident of doing just that having built up a head of steam in recent weeks.

Jurgen Klopp’s team have won three games in a row in all competitions, plus four of their last five.

In fact, their record since the opening weekend of the season is very impressive, with 11 wins in 13 matches.

One of the blemishes was a respectable 2-2 draw with Brighton. The other was a 2-1 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in which Liverpool were hard done by when it came to refereeing decisions.

The Reds have not been flawless this term, but overall Klopp will be delighted with his team’s performances over the first three months - and even more so if they are triumphant on the south coast this week.

📝 Bournemouth vs Liverpool betting tips

Liverpool can advance to the last eight of the EFL Cup by getting the better of Bournemouth on Wednesday night.

Liverpool to win and over 2.5 goals - 11/10 (bet365)

Liverpool have not had any trouble putting the ball in the back of the net this season.

They scored three times in a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the weekend, as each member of the starting front three - Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah - put the ball past opposition goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Only Aston Villa and Newcastle United have scored more goals than Liverpool’s return of 23 in the first 10 rounds of Premier League fixtures.

If we look at all competitions, the Reds are averaging 2.79 goals per game. It is fair to say that their attack is firing.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, are struggling to keep the ball out at the other end of the field. They have kept only one clean sheet in the Premier League, while only struggling Sheffield United and Burnley have shipped more goals.

That suggests this could be a high-scoring game. The fringe members of the Liverpool squad that are handed a start here will be determined to make a positive impression, and the forward players should have plenty of joy up against a somewhat shaky Bournemouth defensive unit.

Liverpool/Liverpool half-time/full-time - 13/10 (bet365)

Only Newcastle have scored more first-half goals in the Premier League than Liverpool so far this season.

Klopp’s team also struck three times in the opening 45 minutes of their most recent Europa League fixture, a 5-1 demolition of Toulouse last week.

They will look to make a similarly fast start in this one. Bournemouth have generally not fared well in the opening period of Premier League games, conceding a total of 10 goals - only Burnley have a worse record in that area.

Liverpool have another incentive to take an early lead. As he continues to juggle multiple competitions, Klopp will already be thinking ahead to Sunday’s trip to Luton Town in the Premier League and next week’s away game against Toulouse in Europe.

That is three games at stadiums other than Anfield in just eight days, so getting the win wrapped up early on would help with Liverpool’s preparations.

Bournemouth finally won their first Premier League game of the campaign at the weekend, overcoming Burnley 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium.

That will have been a huge relief for under-fire manager Andoni Iraola, who is likely to shuffle his pack for the visit of Liverpool.

Darwin Nunez to score any time - 7/5 (bet365)

It will be interesting to see the team that Klopp picks for this EFL Cup fourth-round clash on the south coast.

Luis Diaz is absent due to a family issue back in Colombia, but Cody Gakpo should feature in some capacity after making his return from injury as a second-half substitute against Nottingham Forest.

The Netherlands international could start in a central attacking berth, or as part of a three-man midfield.

Alternatively, Klopp could hold Gakpo back with the intention of preserving him for the meeting with Luton.

Even if he does start, that does not necessarily mean Nunez will drop out. The Uruguayan can play on the left or through the middle, and he will be a threat to Bournemouth’s backline wherever he plays.

At the odds available, it is worth tipping Nunez in the anytime goalscorer market.
