Red Sox to play two spring training games in Dominican Republic in 2024

The Red Sox will head to the Dominican Republic for two exhibition games next March.

Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that Boston will face the Rays on March 9 and 10 at Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo as part of the club’s spring training schedule. The news came as part of a larger announcement of the 2024 MLB World Tour, in which the league will host regular season games in three different countries outside the United States and Canada.

Young Red Sox stars Rafael Devers and Brayan Bello are both from the Dominican Republic and will get a chance to suit up in their home country. Devers represented the country in this year’s World Baseball Classic.

“The Red Sox are excited and honored to play in the Dominican Republic next Spring,” Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy said in a statement. “This unique opportunity builds on our long-standing connection to the Dominican Republic and allows us to celebrate the remarkable talents and rich cultural heritage of a country whose passion for the game has distinctly shaped our organization. From the players who have passed through our Dominican Republic Academy to those who have helped us win championships, we have been fortunate to witness the profound impact of Dominican players within our game, and we are thrilled to be able to bring Red Sox baseball to such a vibrant baseball community next year.”

The Red Sox last played outside North America in 2019, when they lost back-to-back regular season games to the Yankees in London. Next year, MLB will host three two-game events overseas. The Dodgers and Padres will open the regular season with two games in Seoul, South Korea, on March 20-21, the Astros and Rockies will play in Mexico City on April 27-28 and the Mets and Phillies will play in London on June 8-9.

The full 2024 MLB regular season schedule will be released Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, according to the league.
