The three-day Grand National race meeting at Aintree begins today.

This year will see crowds return to the festival for the first time since 2019. Last year's race was held behind closed doors with only owners and trainers allowed at the racecourse.

However, this year's event will be a different affair as racegoers put on their best finery and keep their fingers crossed for a winner.

The opening day will pay tribute to the NHS for their hard work during the pandemic. Aintree racecourse has donated 10,000 Grand National Thursday tickets to NHS workers across Merseyside.

Seven races are scheduled for the first day of the Grand National. Gates open at 11am, with the first race starting at 1.45pm and the last race concluding at 5.15pm.

You can watch the racing on ITV, Racing TV or listen to live commentary on talkSPORT2.

Our reporters and horse racing experts are at the track to bring you the day's biggest racing stories.

Merseyside Police Ladies Day update

Racegoers attended in their thousands for the first day of the Grand National Festival 2022.

The crowds were in high spirits and a successful policing operation took place to support the event.

Chief Inspector Matthew Moscrop said: “It was great to see everyone out enjoying the Aintree festival today after such a long time without spectators and we hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable time, despite the blustery weather.

“Even more visitors are expected tomorrow for Ladies Day and so I’d like to remind everyone to plan your journey in advance, leave plenty of time for security searches on the way into the course and drink responsibly but most importantly, have a great time.

“Officers will be both inside and outside the course engaging with the public so do come and say hello to us, highlight any concerns and report any incidents.”

Best outfits spotted at Grand National 2022 Thursday

It’s only day one and there's already been lots of wonderful fashion on display at this year's Grand National Festival 2022.

Thousands of people arrived at Aintree today for NHS Day, a day to honour the efforts of staff during the coronavirus pandemic. Grand National Thursday kicks off the whole event, which will run until April 9, when one horse will be crowned winner of the world's greatest steeplechase.

While the weather isn’t what racegoers would hope, the rain definitely didn’t do anything to put people off. People came prepared with umbrellas, coats and hats in order to fight off the dull weather - and look stylish while they did.

All horses reported to be OK

ITV Racing reports all the horses from the 4.05 race at Aintree are OK.
