Robin Goodfellow's racing tips: Best bets for Saturday, August 19

Mail Sport's racing expert Robin Goodfellow delivers his tips for Saturday's racing from Newbury, Ripon, Newmarket, Bath, Perth, Doncaster and Market Rasen.

The Great St Wilfrid Handicap takes centre stage at Ripon but it is the consolation race that precedes it which is of more interest for betting purposes.

Mark’s Choice (Ripon, nap, 2.40) won this race off a handicap mark of 75 in 2021 — one of seven victories at the track — when trained by Sam England.

The seven-year-old ran well to finish third in the Great St Wilfrid last season on his stable debut for Adrian Keatley, despite running from 10 pounds out of the handicap, and proved that was no fluke with a victory over this course and distance in August last year off 81.

Mark’s Choice is down to 77 following some below-par efforts but was beaten just one-and-three-quarter lengths on his penultimate start off 80 and looks sure to be involved in the finish.

Elsewhere on ITV, Strike (Newmarket, nb, 2.05) bids to win the Grey Horse Handicap at Newmarket for a second year in a row off only a three-pounds higher mark, while CHINDIT (Newbury, 3.35) bids to make it the perfect start for his new owners, Villoo Poonawalla Greenfield Farms, in the Hungerford Stakes.

The Richard Hannon trained five-year-old won the Greenham Stakes over this course and distance a couple of seasons ago before finishing second earlier this season in the Lockinge Stakes. This drop to seven furlongs should suit and he looks the one to beat.

Newmarket – 1.50 Kemari (nap)

BATH

Newmarket – 8.10 Dubai Dreamer (nb)

RIPON

Northerner – 3.15 Lakota Blue (nap); 4.58 Queenmambo (nb).
