Rutgers football dismisses former 4-star LB

The Rutgers football program dismissed former four-star linebacker Anthony Johnson from the program due to a “violation of team rules,” head coach Greg Schiano announced in a statement Monday night. His biography was removed from the program’s website at the time of the announcement.

A Philadelphia native who was a standout at Neumann Goretti High School, Johnson was the third-highest ranked recruit in the Scarlet Knights’ 2021 class. He participated in four games during the 2022 season, maintaining his redshirt in doing so. Most of his action came on special teams.

Johnson’s dismissal marks the second former four-star linebacker that Rutgers has lost this offseason after Newark native Khayri Banton entered the transfer portal in December.

Despite their high recruiting rankings, the Scarlet Knights will not be smarting from their losses given the depth it is expected to have at his position.

The Scarlet Knights will have Moses Walker, another former four-star linebacker, return from the torn ACL that kept him out of the entire 2022 season. Veteran Mohamed Toure, who suffered the same injury in spring game, is also expected back, as is Tyreem Powell, who had a standout sophomore season (six tackles for loss, three sacks, four passes defended) this fall, and senior Deion Jennings, who will use his final season of collegiate eligibility.
