THE LOWDOWN

SALERNITANA

It was always expected to be a struggle for Salernitana and they are very much living up to that pre-season view. Onto their second manager of the campaign already, following the sacking of Paulo Sousa, Filippo Inzaghi’s Campanians begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom in the Serie A table.

The Garnets are still winless after their opening 12 matches and find themselves five points adrift of safety. They come into this on the back of an entertaining 2-2 draw with Sassuolo but will be immensely frustrated having gone 2-0 up inside 17 minutes a couple of weeks ago. They have conceded the most goals in the league, letting in 24 so far.

LAZIO

Coached by Maurizio Sarri, Lazio began the season under a cloud and that has not gone away as they languish in the middle-of-the-table after 12 matches so far this season. The capital city club have struggled for any fluency and rhythm in their performances throughout the campaign with Sarri coming under a fair bit of pressure at Stadio Olimpico.

The visitors were held to a goalless draw in the Derby della Capitale a couple of weeks ago against Roma – which means their last four matches across all competitions have produced just three goals. That is very unlike Lazio and very much unlike a Sarri team, who typically attempt to play fluent and progressive, proactive football.

LAZIO

Maurizio Sarri is having to deal with some key absentees for this weekend with the likes of Matias Vecino, Adam Marusic and Mattia Zaccagni all injured and Luis Alberto out suspended.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Provedel; Lazzari, Patric, Romagnoli, Hysaj; Guendouzi, Cataldi, Kamada; Anderson, Immobile, Pedro

THE PREDICTION

Both of these sides return from the international break under pressure for different reasons and that could lead to quite an entertaining clash. Filippo Inzaghi’s style of football is not necessarily overwhelmingly front foot but up against some struggling opposition that are fragile, they will fancy their chances of getting at Lazio. Lazio, though, will know of Salernitana’s horrible defensive record and see this as a game to finally find some fluency and flow going forward so a high-scoring affair would appear quite likely in Salerno.
