THE LOWDOWN

BOLOGNA

Since the early stages of last season when he was appointed, Thiago Motta has transformed Bologna into an upwardly mobile and generally progressive side. The club, based in Emilia-Romagna, lost the likes of Nicolas Dominguez and Marko Arnautovic over the summer but have maintained an impressive squad and general style of play.

They come into this on the back of a comfortable and comprehensive 2-0 defeat of Hellas Verona in the second round of the Coppa Italia, during the week. Bologna are unbeaten in ten matches across all competitions since their opening day defeat at home to AC Milan. The issue, though, is they have failed to score or scored just one goal in five of those ten games.

LAZIO

Recent seasons have seen a gradual improvement in Lazio, in terms of both performances and their results, under the management of Maurizio Sarri. They have progressed with a more cohesive style of football but the loss of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic over the summer transfer window led to some general unrest within and surrounding the club.

The Romans have started the campaign really slowly but a recent up-turn in form finally has them back in the top-half and pushing towards the European spots. They edged past Fiorentina by a goal to nil in their most recent outing, last week, and have now enjoyed four victories in their last five matches in Serie A.

THE PREDICTION

One team will come into this game quite happy and content that they are pushing towards the top seven, with the other worried that they are underperforming – and yet the latter is actually currently higher in the table. As mentioned, Bologna have played well and are winning admirers this season but there is a general lack of cutting edge and quality in attack. Lazio, on the other hand, are not hitting the consistent levels of fluency that they had last year. A low-scoring encounter is to be expected in this one between two seemingly evenly matched sides.
